using iMac as an LCD

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Is it possible to use an iMac as simply an LCD -- basically able to project my 12" PB's screen & run its programs? I can always use target disk mode, but that is still using the OS from the iMac, as well as its resources (not too mention that it is unlikely I'd be able to run the applications off the PB in target disk mode). One would think that Apple would make some sort of bypass to allow use this way......

No, you can not. And this has been discussed here at least ten times before, please use the search function...

You could use a software-based solution like Apple RemoteDesktop, though, but it will only display your PowerBook's 1024x768 pixel screen, showing black borders around it to fill the rest of the iMac's 17" screen.

VNC allows you to control another machine remotely but it doesn't work very well even over ethernet because the graphics updates are pretty slow.

You run a VNC server on the laptop and a client on the iMac. VNC is built into Tiger so all you do is turn on Apple Remote Desktop in sharing on the powerbook.

Download something like Chicken of the VNC:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/

then run that on the iMac and connect to the powerbook using the right ip address, which you will find on the powerbook under the network utility - it's usually en0 for the ethernet ip and en1 for airport. You can remote desktop via ethernet or wireless but ethernet is faster.

To speed things up, turning down the resolution and colors on the powerbook will help.
