There's a case to be made for an Apple HDTV, pro and con. When I first heard about that infamous rumor a year ago, I was both skeptical and thrilled at the same time. The idea of putting a sort of media center into a TV isn't new. The problem for Apple is, what if a bunch of HDTVs come with mini PCs inside running some sort of Vista media center OS? MS would sure love being in everyone's living room controlling the TV/movie experience and operating their own movie download service. Yes, Apple will have iTV but at some point people are going to wonder why they should pay for two media PCs: the one inside their TV and the iTV.

An all in one solution makes some sense from a marketing perspective but going with components will always be popular. Apple can certainly market the iTV plus a separate HDTV display that would also double as a display for the Mac mini and Mac Pro and that'd also work with MacBook Pros and maybe even MacBooks.

Once the iTV comes out, Apple will need to implement HD downloads through the iTunes store. I imagine HD video could be streamed directly to the iTV without the need for a computer. Once you set up an iTunes account, you should be able to buy movies directly from your TV via iTV.

Actually I think both an Apple TV and projector are likely. Apple makes things simple. Even seniors can usually run the basics w/o too much trouble. Name me one TV with a menu system that even approaches what Apple would do in ease of use.

Think Apple's: styling + menus and remote + quality + increase in Apple store traffic and income + WiFi for real time photo's & video viewing + built in iTV + iTunes movie downloads = lots'o'sales.

Maybe even a Boze surround sound add-on...

Ireland, I know you like the all in one - or should I say Apple likes the all in one - but I sure hope the screen is separate from the box. Anyway...

Some of the people here have not read the other threads that talk about an Apple solution in the living room. A good mock up with all the details would go a long way to them understanding what an Apple solution would look like. Hope sombody delivers some good renders.

For those did not read the other threads, many people in the living room are confused and end up with unoptimized HDTV sets and 5.1 sound. They cannot record video easily and juggle five or six remotes. Most of us here on this forum are techies but I am talking about the other 99% of the population. They need a good solution that is simple to set up and is optimized out of the box.

Most people do not know the difference between composite and component. Add in DVI, SDI, HDMI, RCA, TRS, speaker wires, ethernet, phone line, all the new connectors - most people end up with a pile of spaghetti behind some beast of a entertainment cabinet. Then they attempt to crawl behind this behemoth and program it all in the dark using a flashlight. Then once it is set, they cannot move the beast. Then they close the solid door to all the components and the five IR remotes don't work. I have seen this many times.

What is worse is that their picture quality sucks and their sound does too. Most people are amazed to see anybody get good HDTV and hear 5.1 sound. Why? Not because it looks and sounds incredible but that it works. Go to some of the other tech websites and hear the horror stories by the tech/geek gods. They struggle to get it right. How can the mere mortal non-techie get it right?

That is what Ireland is getting at. Like others have said. Apple coming out with a living room solution is far less a leap then Apple coming out with a portible music player. Heck, Apple already pre-announced the iTV. It is not that far of a stretch.

Since Apple is getting into the living room with iTV and movie downloads, they need to go the whole nine yards and do an iPod for the living room. It is the combination of iTunes and iPod that make Apple's music player a winner. If Apple is getting into movie downloads - which they have - then where is their iPod for the living room? That is what Ireland is talking about. He is thinking different and very Apple-ish. I just hope Apple is too.

Apple is truly the next Sony. They have stores to sell products like this. Add in cell phones/iPod devices and everything integrates. I can just see people walking into Apple stores and sitting down on a couch and seeing great HDTV, hearing 5.1 sound and seeing it all interact with Front Row. It streams photo slideshows, plays tunes, shows tv and movies, and even has a wireless hub built in. Of course it all hooks up with about 5 wires easily marked and comes with tech support to help set it up. Heck, for another 50 bucks, Apple will come deliver it all to your door and set it up.

Oh and that new iPhone plugs right into the iTV or Mac. Transfer shows, address book contacts, read your email, see your calander - finally an Apple PDA - throw in GPS for the road - heck, the new iPod could even be the remote. It could have a big touch screen.

Speaking of GPS. What if the new iPhone/iPod had GPS and also integrated with mapquest or Google maps. Enter the address where you want to go and the directions get downloaded to your iPod. Take it with you in the car and not only does it give you directions, it actually displays the map and verbalizes the directions as you drive.

This is the kind of solutions possible by Apple getting into the living room and cell phone business. Solutions that just work. So, lets dream and see some mock ups. I gave mine verbally.

What sorts of components do you need to have a good HDTV home entertainment system? Say you have a good display, add iTV, a Blu-ray disc player, a TiVo-like DVR, and a stereo surround system. Of course, Apple could combine all of those components into one unit that stands apart from the display but would they? There's a rumor about Apple developing a surround sound system for the living room or just some new iPod speakers.

Apple could certainly make some components that would all be integrated into the Front Row control system and activated with one simple, easy to use remote. Another approach would be for component makers to agree on a connection scheme so they'd all work together, just as Apple does now with 3rd party printers and Bonjour.

As for an iPod for the living room, that iTV box could be it since it has a HD. Just store your music and video collection on it, if it's of a sufficient size. My guess is that HD is small and mostly intended for caching streaming files but who knows?

I'd sure be happy if Apple could have a major presence in the living room. Our lives would be simpler and more enjoyable.

I still think there will be a projector and likely a large LCD TV though. Unless Apple just goes there and sets up a THX certification type arrangement. Apple will need them to complete the package.

If it is Apple interconnect gear, it will need to be either wireless or two cables max.

why all the talk that apple should buy sony electronics or adobe? why dont they just buy bose. if its the music biz your in seems like a good move. plus they're a clean company with a good reputation...i think.

I had heard about new displays arriving at MWSF 2007 back in February. Since then, lots of other rumors about the new displays have emerged and this one is the latest. Having HDMI makes sense, as does also having HDCP. Intel has copy protection built into its consumer hardware which I'm sure Apple is using in the iTV. And yes, I'm sure the iTV has a hard drive of some sort.

With a new Apple display, an iTV, and a USB tuner, you can have a complete HDTV system. Just add a good surround sound speaker system. Apple may even be working on that, too. I wouldn't be surprised to see an all-Apple home entertainment system next year.

So, how do you imagine Apple will show off the iTV in its stores next year? Plug it into a Sony HDTV screen? I don't think so. It'll be plugged into a new Apple display for sure. If it has a black bezel, a built-in iSight would be invisible.

Will Apple have a display with built-in iTV like that rumor said a year ago? I have no idea but there was a lot of truth in that infamous rumor. The iTV is based on Intel's Viiv platform. Viiv was mentioned in the rumor. Front Row 2.0 was mentioned in the rumor and that's exactly what's built into the iTV box. A large flat panel display was mentioned and indeed, Apple is rumored to be introducing a larger than 30" display soon. That rumor also mentioned HDMI connectors and that's what the iTV has and the new displays are rumored to have.

Maybe that rumor from a year ago was just premature. It originated with some people at Apple, BTW. After it didn't pan out after Macworld 2006, it was thought the rumor was purposely planted by Apple to mislead the rumormongers. I sure caught a lot of hell here for mentioning it but it was a legit rumor, not something I dreamt up.

It looks like 2007 is the year Apple makes a major assault on the living room.
