Apple to grow iPod line slightly, sources say

Thread Starter
Apple Computer is expected tack a new model onto its industry leading line of iPod digital music players as early as Tuesday, AppleInsider has learned.

Details are admittedly scarce, but people familiar with the matter say the new model will likely represent a slight variation of the Cupertino-based firm's existing offerings rather than a breakthrough new product.

Specifically, those people say the announcement will add a new color (or edition) of an existing iPod. Neither the particular color or iPod model were readily available.

Educated speculation points to a variety of possibilities ahead of the Valentine's Day holiday, such as a (PRODUCT) RED iPod shuffle, pink or RED fifth-generation video iPod, or branded special edition iPod. However, a most likely scenario would appear to be the addition of a 2GB (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano to round out the company's existing 4GB and 8GB offerings.

Apple originally introduced the (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano as a single 4GB model in mid-October but quickly expanded the offering to include an 8GB offering just three weeks later.

"Customer response to the iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition has been off the charts," Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing, said at the time.

Although the $149 2GB iPod nano remains the most popular model of Apple's best selling iPod line, it's available solely in a monotone silver.

Apple contributes $10 from the sale of each iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED to the Global Fund to help fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. It also sells a $25 iTunes (PRODUCT) RED gift card available for purchase at its Apple's retail and online stores.

Interesting. I'd say Beatles too. Not that Think Secret has been any good lately - but they are saying on their secret note it could be monitors released tomorrow...

Reliable sources have indicated that an Apple product announcement is in the works for Tuesday, but sources have been unable to nail down the specifics of the announcement.

Sources have placed a reasonable degree of certainty on an announcement surrounding displays, however, suggesting a price cut at the minimum or a new line of displays entirely. Apple's displays have fallen significantly behind the competition; a 20-inch Dell display, which uses the same panel as Apple's 20-inch Cinema Display, sells for less than $400, while Apple continues to charge $700 for its equivalent display.

Yeah Think Secret generally is cr*p. However it is interesting that both sites are getting notice of something new tomorrow... not sure if that increases the likelihood or not.

If Apple was to release a 2gig red Nano I would guess its the right time. If they are adding Beatles to iTunes or even a Beatles iPod (Superbowl rumor) then they would be smart to announce the red one before this Sunday, so that they get max press out of both announcements.

We will see and I hope they are correct. I almost purchased a new 23" today but this rumor stopped me. I need a new monitor bad!

There is still no RED iPod nano in Australia. Maybe Apple will finally announce it availability down under. New Zealand already has their red nanos

What would a special edition Beatles iPod be like? A white nano with the White Album preloaded? A Yellow Submarine version?

I like the idea of a RED shuffle, a RED 2GB nano, and a RED 5.5G iPod. I'd also like to see new displays at new price points and an updated Clovertown dual quad Mac Pro.

Yes.
Depends on the deal and the timing. I currently own only one Beatles album in digital form. I do find that I yearn for the music from the old LPs in the attic, but can't quite seem to get started re-collecting all the albums. If I was in the market for a new iPod, and if the suposed Beatles version came with a certificate for Beatles music from iTunes to offset the cost... well I would be all over that.
In fact, as I type that, I get excited and think...maybe I am ready for a new iPod so, for me, maybe it only depends on the deal.

Valentine's card:

Roses are red,
nanos are too,
I want a 6th gen iPod,
and I'm sure you do too.

Cut the crap with these minor low-end product updates, Apple. "Ooh, pretty colors, that's how we'll compete with Zune and Sansa" (even though sadly it actually works). It's been since Oct/Nov 2005 since the flagship iPod received a new generation, and it's looking tired.

Maybe a special edition one for Valentine's Day?

If they release a pre-loaded Beatles iPod, whatever color, they would not be about to keep production in line with demand; the Beatles are just so big its prettty incredible.

That said, I hope they just put the Beatles work on iTMS as individual downloads, not albums. I tend to like one or two songs off of albums and end up paying for stuff I never listen to.

I just hope it isn't a TIE DIE or PSYCHADELIC or YELLOW iPOD (dear god, no yellow submarine theme!!!). I am thinking an all white iPOD (even the back - white album-esk) with the Beatles logo on back.

The TRUE video iPOD would be even better, but that would be quite the shocker. Touch Screen.

Keep your fingers crossed... I will too. Steal a little bit of Vista's Thunder.

After introducing the iPhone as a full-screen iPod, anything less than that would be a screw-up.

They're not going to release a 6G video ipod with touch screen via a simple website update.

Others are now reporting that there will be 4 new $79 products - sounds like shuffles. Perhaps shuffles with 2 gigs? Red shuffles? Maybe iWork and iLife, which I believe are $79 each?

The full screen ipod will happen but not 'til after June... (or April if you believe the hype)

No doubt! They need to at least intro a iPhone without the phone bit (a.k.a. not tied to Cingular!). Get Skype on the thing and WiFi then becomes a great way to phone home.

MacRumors says they have confirmation (but not CONFIRMED!) of 4 new 79-buck products.

- RED shuffle
- iLife update
- iWork update
- ???

The updates better be good if they aren't sufficient to warrant a presentation (this would mean no earth-shattering changes?).

Apple raised the bar with presentations with the iPhone, so tha¥ey gotta crank out some really hhot stuff over th enext months.

Credit card... paid up!8) Not for long, I hope.

Wasn't it announced very publicly that they are now calling themselves Apple Inc??

And when, oh when, are AppleInsider going to stop telling us that Apple are "the Cupertino-based iPod maker"? I think we all got that one years ago...

The other one just went onto my "ignore" list; what a way to start off.

Are we looking at a 9:00am up time, perhaps? The stores are usually only down an hour or two, correct?
