I thought this was rock guitarists. . .

Easily: John Petrucci. I can't think of any pure-rock guitarists with as good a library of riffs and solos as his.

Good list trickfall. When I hear the term "rock" it can be very broad.
Still I could go on and on and on...

1. Richie Stotts
2. Jeff Beck
3. Santiago Durango
4. Dr. Know (Gary Miller)
5. Buckethead
6. Geordie Walker
7. Daniel Ash
8. Kelley Deal
9. Joan Jett
10. Suzi Gardner

And another honorable mention...Ruyter Suys

Nice list yourself! Nashville Pussy rocks. One of the better shows I've seen in the last few years was Nashville Pussy opening for The Reverend Horton Heat. I too could go on for days listing guitar players.

I've seen Rev. Heat but never Nashville Pussy. But I have watched some of their stuff on YouTube...

Nashville Pussy's Ruyter Suys guitar solo compilation

Must. see. them.

Play guitar in 10 minutes (or less) with Nashville Pussy

Good guitarist. But not legendary. I'll give you props since I'm an old school punk. Check out his work with Iggy Pop (worked with Iggy on Blah, Blah, Blah & Instinct) and the Avengers (played guitar on their studio stuff).

Eddie Van Halen
Alex Lifeson
Jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhoads
Joe Satriani
David Gilmour

in no particular order.

Two more great guitarists from the seventies:
Barry Bailey and J.R. Cobb of the Atlanta Rhythm Section.
Great southern rock & roll.
