Is price the only value the AppleTV has over a Mac Mini?

Not so. Once you get the appropriate codec components installed you can use QT Pro to create a reference file of the file. This take just a few short seconds to create. Once it's created you just drop it into iTunes; your AppleTV will play it.

The reference file is really just a simple .MOV container that points to the original file (eg: .AVI, .WMV, .OGG). It's really just making a shortcut in the iTunes Library.

On the price issue: if you have money to throw away on a flat panel wide screen TV, then the Apple TV's price looks like pocket change.

As whether price is the only point make it seem better the Mac mini: no, since this device feels like an appliance that you hook up to your TV and not a computer that you hook up to the TV. Its may all be the same under the hood, but the usability on the outside is very different.

What I don't get is why a desktop and dock with app icons shows up before the frontrow like interface. Why would that be part of the Apple TV OS? Or is that just part of the hack?

TOTALLY what I was thinking. Maybe it's the "cinema verite" or something feeling that has to accompany hacks/ releases/ leaks/ previews etc. If the camera ain't shaking, it's too "real".... ...Good for the hackers though. Hack the planet!!!11!1!1!
