We can keep playing musical chairs with the reasons either way, but only Apple knows.
With desktop sales in the toilet for everyone, it's possible that Apple simply isn't interested in investing more on a desktop design. Who knows what they have been doing in their labs that has been abandoned for some reason or other?
Again, I must remind everyone that we are not the general public Apple is after. If Apple doesn't think it's a good idea, it will never see the light, no matter how loudly we protest.
