Honestly, you don't need to worry about it. Just use the full-size images in iMovie, zoom as you please, and then output to iDVD. It will automatically do whatever it needs to the final resolution.
First time I did this, I hemmed and hawed and fretted. I scanned photos at ridiculous resolutions to be sure I had the best quality. But it's all the same. I've done this quite a few times since. My digital photos are all 3MP, and they look beautiful not matter what I do to them in iMovie. The only thing you have to worry about is if they are low res photos, you won't want to zoom in too much (or at all).
