Safari - Page 6

Hassan,

I'm not too savvy but I had the same problem at first. What I did was drag the logo to the hard disc. Then I dragged into the applications file. it asked if I would like to replace the original (natch, of course). Then I dragged the logo from the applications folder into the dock, clicked on it and it finally launched. Don't know if this will help.

Here are some Shortcuts I found in S:

Apple + Shift + "|" toggle-collapses the URL bar and buttons.

Apple + "\\" toggles a status bar onto the bottom which displays links or loading URLs.

Apple + B toggles the bookmark bar on and off.
(These three combined give you a turtle-mode where all the extraneous stuff is gone but a bar at the top to grab with)

Apple + 1, 2, 3 etc. matches the order of bookmarks in the bookmark bar.

Apple + Up or Down Arrow takes you to top or bottom of the page you are viewing.

Apple + Shift + "+" increases text size.

Apple + "-" Shrinks it.

Tab rotates you through URL bar, then Google bar, then the page.

Actually, most if not all of these are found in menu shortcuts, although many were not mentioned in the HELP shortcuts. Anyone found more?

just click <a href="http://file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Shortcuts.html" target="_blank">here</a> while you're in Safari or another browser; but Safari must be installed.

it won't let me fix the url ! damn ! just copy and paste this:

file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Shortcuts.html

So, is it safe to use Safari yet, has the fatal bug gone or is there a way to get rid of it. If not when is the next update?

didn't work for me, came out as:

<a href="http://file///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Shortcuts.html" target="_blank">http://file///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Shortcuts.html</a>

If you take the http:// bit off (and installed Safari in the usual location) you can read about Safari's shortcuts.

If you use these options to hide everything you can use Command + L to get the url bar back for long enough to type a new address. When you hit enter it disappears again. Yet another nice touch.

edit: I've just noticed that if you toggle the status bar it appears behind the Dock instead of covering the bottom of the page. Not good.

OK , I've just re-read the whole 6 pages and i'm still intrigued by the keychain aspect. Do we have a definitive answer about this yet? I know Moki took it on the chin for posting too quickly but I'm with him on this. I've tried the suggestion of entering login etc. once then relaunching Safari but that doesn't seem to work. My cookies are set to "only from sites you navigate to". Is that the problem?

Wow. That was slowest one I've come across. Some are slower than others I've noticed:

<a href="http://www.kino.com/metropolis/intro.html" target="_blank">http://www.kino.com/metropolis/intro.html</a>
<a href="http://www.2001exhibit.org/2001_splash.html" target="_blank">http://www.2001exhibit.org/2001_splash.html</a>

None of these were though:

<a href="http://looplabs.com/" target="_blank">http://looplabs.com/</a>
<a href="http://rad-e8.com/" target="_blank">http://rad-e8.com/</a>
<a href="http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/" target="_blank">http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/</a>
<a href="http://thesimpsons.com/" target="_blank">http://thesimpsons.com/</a>

<a href="http://www.sfdt.com/xiao-xiao/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.sfdt.com/xiao-xiao/index.html</a>

Maybe it depends on what kind of content the Flash is pushing. Anyway, obviously it can really use improvement.

Keychain defintely does store passwords for any site that throws up a password pop-up window (a sheet in this case). It doesn't work for password fields embedded in web pages, like .Mac's or Apple's support pages. So it works just like OmniWeb's keychain support.
I think it is only storing cookies for sites that use them to hold your password. I don't see it accessing the keychain to hold sites that don't allow cookies like chimera does.

Please reread the statement above yours. It stores passwords for sites that have a true password system (ie. drops down a User/Password sheet to grant you access to the whole site). It does not store the login passwords that webboards like AppleInsider use, as they're embedded in the HTML, rather than being true website passwords.

I do just downloaded them. another thing i have noticed is the guy going on about multi windows, well i dont have that on mine (latest version of safari). from the looks of his picture his tab for multi view is where my "Report bugs to apple" button is. I cant find it anywhere in prefs, so i'm wondering if there are 2 different versions of safari. I chose my download location as UK, where i live, anyone else who dont live in USA have multipage view?

After upgrading to v51, I noticed the rendering problems I was experiencing at thescreensavers.com are gone. I sent a report about it. Others must have too, because now it's fixed. Cool!

It support tons of international characters - if that's what you mean.

In fact it's the only browser on the Mac that's able to show Icelandic correct.

The multipage pic that you saw was simply a mock-up of what something like that could look and behave like. It's just an idea, and there is no functional hack like it (yet).

I *love* the Command-Shift-D shortcut! easy add to bookmarks!

You know what the best feature of Safari is? The proper behavior of the Maximize (green) button: it resizes the window (almost) always just right. Best browser feature ever!
OK say you've been filling out forms at a site for a while. You forgot something and you need to check it on the last page so you go back, and then forward again. OOPS! You just lost all your input! Like here at AI! It would be nice if Safari remember input in text entry fields when clicking back and forth, like in Chimera and IE. Just my 2ยข

I don't like multiple window browsing (do tabs please!) at all. It's so confusing. Safari seems to open more separate windows than any other browser. Or is there some way to have all external links show up in the same window?

The application Safari has unexpectedly quit.
The system and other applications have not been affected. OK

I get this message on start-up and I have re-booted and I am using the latest version. I removed ie from my bar and now I have to put it back

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you resolve it?

Something VERY COOL that it does:

Have a look at wap.sonyericsson.com on IE and try and do anything.

Turds.

Try it on Safari ... first it won't do shoite as the site sniffs your browser and says "You're not IE"

BUT use the Debug menu to change the Safari user agent to Win IE 6.0 and it renders it BEAUTIFULLY.

Yup, it renders wap pages.

If you read through this thread or Apple discussions you'd find it's already discussed.

Go to Home/Library/Preferences, find com.apple.safari.plist and delete. It's normally due to that being corrupted.

Someone plz hack some CM into this thing. Not being able to right click back a page is getting very annoying. Chimera is a 0.6 release and it's way more polished than this. It's nice that Apple released this early to get more ppl working on the project, but to call it a point 1.0x beta release is just,.. gall.

Some people just dont agree with the whole less than 1.0.0 version number thing. You should use how long the thing has been in development vs. Chimera, which is to say, not long at all.

And besides, you can right click on a page, but you don't get many options if you don't right click on a link or image.

i use chimera for most of the things.

for those few i want to see, safari plays them bad.

so i just got icab 2.9, that's fast enough, and still is not IE. i've had enough of safari.

so, chimera, icab and exploiter.

I'll just drop in ...

I tried Safari at an Apple Store. Very nice. I like the small screen footprint. The google search rocks. But since reading about how people want tabbed browsing I started using it in Mozilla and I love it. Lets hope thats in there soon.
Things I've noticed:

If you turn off images in Safari Preferences, there's no toolbar option or menu command to make them display. If you click on an image, you can open it in a window or download it but not actually load it in to the page. (This was in the older build, so I don't know if v51 fixed this.)

Another bug dealing with the favorites toolbar was addressed by the v51 update. Good job Apple! (I'll post the bug if you care.)

Also, I just noticed on a computer with the older build installed the the newer build shows up in Software Update.

I don't use tabbed browsing and I rarely use all the features of IE. The only feature I truly miss is form autocompletion, but otherwise Safari totally rocks my world!
