uh-oh, homicide at the robot factory!

in the future, everyone drives an audi

(ok, the lobby computer talks to him over the speakers, but there are a lot of other people in there, it's pretty rude of that computer to talk about one guy's location when all those other people are there)

You would realize the movie is utter crap if you had read the original Isaac Asimov book.

Booze is a hobby. Unless it's full time work. Then.... you need to get a hobby.

Somebody always say that. I haven't read the books but I thought the movie was great. It's one of my favourite movies. I doubt reading the books will change my mind on that but I might check them out.

Gentlemen, may I introduce Major (Motoko) Kusanagi.

Well, this is a human version of her. But she will do.

I would highly recommend reading and watching the Ghost in the Shell mangas and animes. Official (Flash) site.
Great view into the possible robotic/cyborg future.

Oh, and I Robot the movie sucked.

The movie was OK as a mindless popcorn flick, but it has almost no relation to the book, other than the name. Isaac Asimov would spin in his grave at 7200rpm if knew what happened to his stories.

Liked Ghost In The Shell, but it must be admitted that it owes a huge debt to The Matrix (and The Matrix owes a huge visual debt to the first Blade movie).

Er. Matrix: 1999

Ghost in the Shell: 1995

Who ripped off who again? And, if you'd like a look at the actual source material for The Matrix, go read Grant Morrison's _The Invisibles_ vol 1.

Er, Did you even read the Wiki link?

The series was first adapted into a theatrical anime film adaptation in 1995

The Wachowski brothers, makers of the Matrix trilogy, acknowledged the influence of Ghost in the Shell in an interview.[2] Producer Joel Silver also mentioned in an interview on the Animatrix DVD that he was shown the Ghost in the Shell movie during a pitch from the Wachowski brothers to indicate the style and look of the film they wanted for The Matrix.

The Manga was older than the anime by about 4 years.

Both Blade AND The (Wachowski brothers) Matrix owe Masamune Shiro and Mamoru Oshii a mighty high five.

I'm afraid to say that my robot would be akin to the Austin Powers fembots, but without the big hair a fluffy nightwear. As well as walking around my office looking incredibly hot, she would also file my tax returns, screen my calls and make me delicious meals at lunch.

Oh hang on.. that sounds like my wife!

From Pink Tentacle, my favorite Japanese robot/culture site...

Quote:
Kansei, a robot face capable of 36 expressions that vary according to emotional interpretations of words it hears, is the latest achievement to emerge from a Meiji University research lab working to develop conscious and self-aware robots. When Kansei hears a word, it uses software to access a database of 500,000 keywords, create word associations and determine an emotion ranging from happiness to sadness, anger and fear which is expressed by a system of 19 actuators under its silicone skin.

I don't know about Blade owing a debt to Masamune Shiro or Mamoru Oshii, but I know for a fact that there are numerous scenes that were lifted wholesale from Blade (although improved) and retooled for use in The Matrix.

I read the book a long time ago, but I remember it being interesting, but non-climactic. As it was framed as a non-fiction history book, this is to be understood. It would have been a difficult sell as a major movie. The book and the movie share very little, except for a name and the idea that robots rule the future.

IIRC, the first robot, Roby, was a 1996 model. This, incidentally, is the same year that Khan left Earth in the SS Botany Bay.

Very few movies are great representations of their respective books; it is hard to make it all fit into 90 minutes. Also, what sells a book may or may not sell a movie.

I BTW loved I, Robot and think it's a great movie.

Millenium Man is another great movie about personal assistant robots; Robin Williams is great as the robot.

Your = the possessive of you, as in, "Your name is Tom, right?" or "What is your name?"

You're = a contraction of YOU + ARE as in, "You are right" --> "You're right."

While we're on the subject of robots!!

I Robot the book was good, in a different way than the movie was good. (and what Bergermeister said)

Personally, I think humans will become cyborgs long before robots/AIs are developed enough to take over the world...

But just in case, remember not to try to pull the plug!
