Engadget is reporting they have verified a group's claims of a quick, software-only unlock procedure for the iPhone:

The cat is truly out of the bag at this point.

Woot!

Now, are there any AI members who care to donate an iPhone to me?

I'll give you an unlocked Blackberry Pearl and an 80 Gig iPod in return.

Well this would have been great news for me earlier... but iPhone is not in my budget now. I'll wait and see what's released in HK, and if the phones in Europe and Asia are released unlocked or updated... I'll probably be in the market after Christmas.

But I'll be getting a new 180GB (or 120?) iPod when it comes out in 2 weeks...

The iPhones in Europe and Asia are indeed being released locked.

BUT -- I hope people are ready to shell out 50 bucks to unlock their iPhones every time Apple does a software update. It's in their best interest to maintain their locked arrangement with ATT since they get about 400 dollars over the course of the two year contract in addition to each phone sold hardware wise -- and all they need is about 6 lines of code to lock those phones back up again.

I think people are best to wait.
