What happened to hiding Classic???

okay, this might be a "Genius Bar" thread -- mod, feel free to move it if you think it deserves to be there instead.

my question: remember when the "classic" system preference had an option to "hide during startup"? well, i have not seen that toggle checkbox since 10.1 (10.0.x and previous all had it). am i doing something wrong? i have classic set to launch at startup so there's little lag if i accidentally launch a classic app, but i hate having to manually hide/minimize the launch window each time.

anyone else notice this? i have installed 10.1 (the full version, not upgrade onto 10.0.x) on my g4 500 dvd at work, my imac dv se 400 and pismo 500 dvd, and the option is gone on ALL of them... hmmm... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Not entirely sure what you mean...and it probably is a genius bar question, but I don't care if you don't. Are you just saying that you can no longer hide the classic startup window (with the OS 9 splash screen, loading extensions, etc), or are you saying you don't know how to make it not launch at startup. The latter is easy. Just go to the Classic Preference Pane and disable it. If the former, I always just collapse the window into the Dock and it disappears automatically once everything loads into memory. I don't know of any widget where you can disable the window, but I'll double-check...there might be a Terminal trick to help you out with this, but I don't know what it is unfortunately.

i wish i had a screenshot, but i don't want to install 10.0.x to figure this out. essentially, under the "classic" section of the system preferences (before the 10.1 reshuffling of the system preferences), you had several choices, including "launch classic at starup" (which is still there) and then a SUBpreference to "hide classic during launch" (which meant that only the "classic icon" would appear in the dock, and then disappear once it had fully launched.

i know i'm not crazy... it really was there, and now it seems to be gone, and i don't understand why. and i don't think it's an adminstrative access privilege thing, since i am the only user (and, just for the hell of it, i turned off all protectiion for the system to see if it would magically appear, but no luck).

there must be a way to get it back, just like someone re-activated the "one-window" mode from the mac os x public beta (which i use often, but apple removed any easy activation widget for the feature).

Sorry Dude. I don't see that preference option anywhere. I think Apple must've nixed it for whatever reason (officially, they rarely need one ). There has to be a way of eliminating the startup window thingy using the Terminal though. If I can make my Dock transparent and chance the color of the app triangles with a Terminal script, surely someone must know a way to disable to window you're talking about during Classic startup....

I know there's an OS X web site that has lot's of tips and tricks like this...can't remember the URL off the top of my head. I'll look around some.

Well, I couldn't find anything conclusive, but I bet if you submit your question to the people who run this site

they will be able to help you or find someone who can. There are all kinds of Classic hacks listed on the page I linked to, so I'm even more confident now that something can be done to change the behavior you're talking about.

A (sort of) workaround... when the window is open, make sure it is active then option-click on something else. Hides it. Don't know how to make it hide automatically though.
