...It had *no* cellular radio?
(Answer - an iPod Touch)

But what if it had a WiMax radio?
What would it be then?

Is there any possible way that Apple (and Intel) could take-on the cellphone industry by thinking different and playing playing technology leapfrog?

Would it be covered by the AT&T deal? Like the touch isn't?

A handheld WiMax device with VoIP? Is that a phone? You'd have to look at the wording of the contract.

OK - To be honest, I was wishfully thinking out-loud.

The wish went... What if tomorrow... Apple launch a wireless laptop with an associated high-speed wireless internet service. (air) Only available in a bunch of cities. Based on Intel's Wimax - and using network infrastructure from Clearwire etc.

If it worked-out. things could get interesting.

Throw in some fancy Apple handset, and instead of having to get in bed with cellphone industry, Apple could kick them out and keep the house and the kids.

To be honest, I don't believe it either, but I'd just love to see the cellphone people get a good ass-kicking.

John Gruber was thinking along similar lines. The Air could clearly do with proper wireless internet.
