However, now they each have a badge or a "mini icon" of the parent application to show which windows belong to which apps. See here:

Applenut, you can move the search filed anywhere in the toolbar you like, the same as any other element in the toolbar.

My theory for the missing pinstripes is that Finder.app and Dock.app think that the pinstripes make them look fat and therefore have stopped wearing things with horizontal lines.

I could be wrong. But I have this gut feeling...

Any chance of a screenie of the new aqua beachball? For some strange reason, this, for me, is undoubtedly the most exciting feature of Jag. I guess it's because i have a slow computer and the beachball is the UI feature i stare at the most.

Does anyone else think that the various themes Apple is showing in Jaguar (stripes, no stripes, brushed aluminum) are all "balloons to find our reaction prior to it's release? Or will they actually be giving us theme options?

I'm hoping for the latter. The first thing I will do is turn off that brushed aluminum. Just in case it is the former, I have now voted.

starfleetX, can you tell if Quartz Extreme is in there yet? If it's there, how do you know? Is it noticably faster?

Thanks.

The shots, etc. are awesome, by the way!

heheheh. I stared at that movie for at least 5 minutes on loop. Then i blew it up to fullscreen and stared at it some more..

That is cooler than the spinning hands on the wait-watch in system 7

Thanks,

Oh, and what was I thinking, PowerBooks too.

I'm sure 10.2 will have Energy Saver settings and more.

Late summer sure is a long time away!

There are already more energy saver options. Processor speed can be set to normal or highest. And there are presets for performance, conversation and dvd playback.

There are energy saving settings. I don't know if it's just on my portable or desktops have it too. Not as extensive, but you can define settings for battery and plugged in and you can spin down the HD too.

Take a look the sheet in this older screenshot:

http://www.spymac.com/cgi-bin/pictures/index.pl?photo=297&size=big

and compare it to this one of Jaguar:

http://homepage.mac.com/alphajd/accounts3.jpg

posted by Mage. Is it just my imagination, or has Apple made sheet translucency a bit more subtle in Jaguar? Either way, that's something I wanted, and I like the look of it.

[quote]Does the ball change colors if you are not using the 'Blue' theme?

Nope. It stays blue even if you "sudo" the system prefs and change root's settings.
[quote]can you tell if Quartz Extreme is in there yet? If it's there, how do you know? Is it noticably faster?

Ab-so-friggin'-lutely! I can especially notice it when the video card wigs out when scrolling sometimes and when chunks of windows totally disappear or are drawn on the wrong area of the screen. Seriously, though, it works rather well considering how young this technology is.

Oh, by te way, the reports of Aqua being darker or slightly hue shifted are correct. There's some different gamma correction or something being done by the extreme quartz that makes everything a bit more saturated than they should be. More on this latter as I try to compensate for it myself... although FCP, Illustraror, and Photoshop work fine so far in 10.2, this coloring bug makes it hard to get and real work done.
[quote]What is the scanner support like in Jaguar? Is there any?

There is some kind of scanner support, but I'm not sure what level because I don't have a scanner. I might be able to borrow one over the weekend to test it, though, no promises. Check the "Jag-dighub" pics a few pages back for a snap of scanner support in the System Prefs.
[quote]What does it talk about?

Well, with speech recognition on it can carry on knock-knock jokes with you.

Yay! A real Energy Saver! No more "I'm stupid, and OS X should control my life!" oh, and "Dynamically!" of course.
Kinda reminds me of the way Windows "helps" you sometimes. Or the way my parents "help" me sometimes

Anyway, Jaguar's cool beans.

Go Starfleet X go!!!

Any changes to the Cocoa Font & Color Panels...?

Continuing starfleets notes on quartz extreme, I notice it on my dual gig BIG time when minimizing, spring loaded folders and opening and closing folders on the desktop because they all use the scale effect. When minimizing a window, it's almost most instant gone to the dock. It's so fast.

Resizing is also faster.
Contextual menus aren't tho.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't want to repeat what has been said. If you guys still have questions, I'll try to help starfleet answer some.

Im happy to say that this "pre-alpha" release totally rocks on my iBook 14inch with 384MB ram.

Quicktime is amazingly fast... starts in a bounce!!! 10.1.4 takes about 8!!! I guess some libraries get loaded during startup or something.

Services work!! Yippie.

I havent seen anyone comment that when you have icons on "Snap-to-Grid" they sort of 'slide' into place. When you close a window, it doesnt just dissappear, it does a scale effect fade out. Like if I "Get Info" on something, I close the Get Info window and it fades out with a scale effect.

No one mentioned the Audio Midi Setup app found in the utilities folder. Get screenshot here

I dont know about you, but the blues seem a bit more purple and stuff. The colors are a bit whack.

Annoying thing that remains: When you change the name of a file (on desktop for example) the cursor STILL dissappears
until you stop. I hate this.

I am pleasantly happy that my apps on my other partition work fine through Jag so far.

The new FIND (simply Apple+F) appears in a heartbeat thank god. Feels like OS 7 again

Again, what makes me super uber happy is that it makes my iBook feel usable. I hate to say it, but everything DOES feel "snappy"

cool thing just saw: Y'all know the little floating windows of minimized windows from the dock? When you drag it out of the dock, a little mini preview remains... well, this window floats above everything else. When you are playing a movie and minimize it to the dock it keeps playing. When you drag the playing minimized file out of the dock, it KEEPS playing and floats above everything. So, right now Im typing this with a music video about 64x64 pixels large playing in front of me

This is just too cool

If there is ONE thing I have noticed that hasnt improved yet is that the window resizing of apps, folders, etc hasnt gotten any better

here on a dual 800 with 1.5 gigs of RAM and a GeForce 3, i can't see a big difference (5 or 10%)in speed from 10.1.4... maybe on my ibook 600 the difference between 10.1 and jag will be more 'visible' but no beach ball... nice

oh and btw go to System/Library/CoreServices/MenuExtras

there is a new eject menu !

and in system preference you can choose to see the prefs by category or alphabetically

the only feature that i think is not complete is slf... it doesn't work in the dock or in the toolbar... too bad... but it's not even alpha...

I think that the whole Jagwire thing has to be optimized. Perhaps your version did not include extreme quartz ?
I'll bet a multi-threaded Finder that doesn't hang with almost every action makes up a large part of the perceived improvement in performance.

In the preview of springloaded folder (the mov)
i saw a VERY beautiful background picture - a variant of "Aqua Blue" that appears to have a brushed metal effect.

Would you send me that picture mayhaps, Starfleet?

Or anybody else? Thanks!!

Definitely. Now that I can switch apps when one hangs (that is to say, when the finder hangs ), I find OS 9 incredibly frustrating because I'm just stuck waiting for things to finish. Right now I'm giving TIFFany the once-over, and I would be tearing my hair out or raiding the fridge if it were running the process actions in OS 9. Despite the fact I also work in Win2K which this is also possible in, I had to re-educate myself not to sit and wait for my apps if I don't have to. The weakest link in the chain for productivity will always be the user's expectations/ habits/ assumptions.

I think nobody know if quartz extreme is there or not...maybe the speed up is just gcc and better finder ? Who knows ?

I ain't Starfleet but I can tell you that Moz under Jaguar is the same as before... at least it seems so to me

EDIT: Though I have noticed that Entourage is now totally Anti-aliased The text is too small to be antialiased imo. It really does look washed out and blurry.

On the other hand, Word seems to be the same with text. If it does anti-alias it I cant tell much of a difference. Just Entourage for now is blatently anti-aliased.

I hope the Address book from Entourage update will integrate with the system wide Address book. Or at least I hope there will be somekind of script to export it...
