Stuck On Login Screen - Please Help!

I was working on a large photoshop file last night and after about an hour my system froze. I did a restart and when I got to the user login screen, while I can move the cursor around the screen I can't click on any of the login icons.
Tried a safe reboot (shift after start up sound) Tried a PRAM reset (Apple-Option-P-R after start up sound) - all with the same result.

Am totally stuck and stymied....and desperate for help! Thanks~

Try doing a drive repair using either your installer disk and running Disk Utility or the following:

boot into single-user mode holding command-s
when the text comes down, type in:
fsck -f
and hit return
it will run through a repair. When it's done, type reboot and hit return.

(the fans might come on full in single user mode - it's normal to do this)
