I was getting all kinds of errors when trying to upgrade to 2.0.

It wouldn't let me restore and I was getting (error 20). I tried several things and then it finally worked when I pressed option and then restored to the newly downloaded 2.0.

Hope everyone can fix their phones if they are stuck. I was in a panic for a while.

Can anyone confirm if this works on unlocked or jailbroken phones? My iPhone is unlocked only

Of course it won't work on jailbroken and unlocked phones unless you no longer wanted it ot be jailbroken and unlocked. But don't worry, Pwnage has already jailbroken and unlocked it. I'm guessing a new update for the app will be available within 12 hours or so. That is a T-minus one day hack.

Has anyone else noticed that when you type in a password on one of the new apps, each letter you key in is in clear text for a second or two before it gets replaced by the black dot? Apps I have tried are MySpace, Facebook and NYTimes.

2.0 Update works fine plus I'm on a Mac the people that need to worry about losing everything is PC Users. I bought games and apps. The best one I like was Free that's the Remote. I just bought the Apple Express Base Station (802.11n) I can control my iTunes but moe importantly I can have the Airport Express connected to speakers in my bedroom and output sound to either my den and or bedroom. I really like that. Apple got me sold and I still got 16GB iPhone 1st Generation. Some people keep talking of other cell phones like it really matters. I got 32,180 songs in iTunes now. I got almost 1000 TV Shows, and 100 Movies. Plus I can hook my phone up to a TV. What else matters?

Note: Some of you with machines that are set up to Auto Open Safe Files may find your iPhone 2,0 Zip file in the trash and the original file unzipped. Remove the Zip file from the trash and then remvoe the .ZIP file extension so it ends with the remaining .IPSW extension.

2.0 is looking good for me. However the damn Google Maps app thinks I am in Chicago whether I use my wi-fi or Edge. I am in Houston. It works just fine everywhere else except my apartment. Odd. It's been doing that for the last few weeks......must be a tower issue or something. The App store has a very broad range of programs. Seems that a lot of people play Sodoku. I am having fun with the light sabre application. All it needs now is copy/paste and MMS. Once that is done, this will be an even better platform. Good job Apple on 2.0.

Anyone getting me.com working?
software seems to be working great.

However, some of the apps have crashed / frozen my phone already, here is my list:

Pandora
Hold'em
WeatherBug

these are all very nice programs, just v1.0. kinks.

I have never synced my music, so the 'backup' didnt work for those files.
If you manage manually, watch out for the update, especially if the music files are not local.

Hey guy. I got my iPhone a few hours ago. Not bad. Still putting it through the paces. I am inclined to think that it is becoming more a phone than iPod.

I was able to restore to 2.0. The iPhone then rebooted as per normal activity and I could see the new layout with the App Store icon.

The problem comes when I try to restore to backup. The backup seems to run smoothly but when it reboots the iPhone, the phone is stuck on the Apple logo screen, a scrolling wheel appears at center, and then the phone begins to buzz twice every few seconds and nothing happens after that. It's stuck.

Rebooting it initiates the same sequence of events: stuck on the logo screen with a stuck scroll wheel at center.

I was able to reboot and enter recovery mode and then tried to option-restore to 1.1.4. but that gave the error: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (20)."

At this point, it seems that something in the backup process (rather than the restoration process) is causing this problem. I can restore the phone to 2.0 fine but I can't restore the backup nor can I seem to downshift versions back to 1.1.4.

Any suggestions?

As stated, I tried that but it won't let me. I get a "cannot restore" error code in iTunes and it stops the process. Do I need to downgrade my iTunes as well?

You said you tried to restore to 1.1.4, not enter Recovery Mode. They may seem like similiar nomenclature, but the process is very different.

Sorry, I should have specified, I did enter recovery mode, then tried to option-restore to 1.1.4. It attempts to extract the software and then gives me this error after: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (20)."

I'm wondering if I should just set this up as a new iPhone and just redo all the settings? The only thing would be recovering my Notes file I suppose.

I think you are missing a step. Try using ZiPhone or another jail breaking app to put the phone into Recovery Mode via the GUI, and not some complex button manipulation with the iPhone itself.

On 2.0...The phone doesn't seem to want to remember any of my passwords (Voicemail, E-mail, etc) whenever I restart the phone.

Plus, it won't let me re-enter my passwords for my e-mail accounts, so I keep getting an "Invalid Password" whenever the phone tries to check my mail.

I got my iPhone working again with 1.1.4, I lost all of my contacts and photos, no backups .

So I might as well mess around with it now. Do I need iTunes 7.7.0 to make this work? Initially I used 7.6.2 and I got an error message during the upgrade to the 2.0 software. Any ideas?

All I have to do is save the file, then go to my phone when iTunes is open, Shift+Click on check for updates, and find the update file where I saved it and go.

Am I missing something?

You will need the 7.7.

Yeah, you should have 7.7 installed to begin with.

Hey all,
Installed firmware 2.0 this morn...all seemed smooth until i noticed it would no longer connect to my uConnect hands free setup in my 08 Dodge RAM 2500, non-Mygig stereo. Previous 1.1.4 worked flawlessly. Its says paired, but the bluetooth icon does not highlight anymore, and it does not say 'connected' like before....

Anyone else noticed any bluetooth/handsfree pairing problems???

I've tried re-pairing from scratch about 4 times, using different PIN #s, to no avail.

Pairing will complete, but the phone no longer connects. =(

I'm hoping to score a 3G tomorrow, so we'll see if the same is true?

Any info appreciated...

For whatever reason, I can't restore to 1.1.4 from recovery mode (regardless of the method that I put the phone into recovery mode).

Is this a 7.7 thing? Would it disallow downgrading an iPhone to an earlier firmware than 2.0?

And mostly, I'm wondering if anyone has a theory as to why upgrading to 2.0 is fine but trying to restore my backup settings creates that weird freezing problem on start-up for the phone itself.

What? So you can get v2.0 on there, but your problem is restoring your previous media setup from 1.1.4? In that case, just forget about that restore option, add your media/data files from scratch. there are a lot of options to choose from.

The original problem was stated earlier in the thread:

I can upgrade to 2.0 fine. But when I try to restore to backup, the iphone goes through the motions and upon reboot, it stalls on the loading screen.

For whatever reason, 2.0 doesn't seem to like my backup settings. The advice given me was to restore down to 1.1.4 but I can't do that either.

So right now, I have a working 2.0 iphone BUT without any of my settings saved. Nor can I seem to downgrade to 1.1.4. and try restoring to backup from there.

So don't restore the media/data backup. It's only a file of your settings, you can set it back up yourself in a just a minute with a few clicks. Of course, the WebClips will be lost and your icons are out of order, but that shouldn't be a problem to redo.

If I'm unable to restore from backup, I lose all my iPhone settings: speed dials, bookmarks, notes, old SMS, stock, map and weather settings. I could redo this all by hand but that's more than a "few clicks."

Of course, I was under the mistaken belief that Time Machine would have older backups.

At this point, I'll wait it out and see what happens; by tomorrow, I suspect others may have similar problems.

It's a lot less work than trying to go through Recovery Mode and reinstalling several times. Waiting may be good. There seem to be more than a few different issues people are having. Who knows, maybe Apple put this up but didn't official release to see what issues would come up by those wanting to update early.

I need help. I downloaded the iPhone update thing (I'm on a Mac, by the way) but Safari didn't put the original file in the trash or anything. So, I just changed the extension to .ipsw and saved it to my desktop. I then connected my iPhone, opened iTunes and did the Option+Click on the "Check for Update" box and selected the file and when I clicked "Open" a box came up and said "An Unknown Error Occurred (1403)" I don't know what to do. And I already updated my iTunes to 7.7 and everything.

I agree. My iPhone is no longer working correctly . I upgraded to 2.0 and no longer have access to my Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

When I go into Settings, the WiFi row is greyed out and it reads, "No Wi-Fi". When I drill down furhter into Settings > General, the Bluetooth row is greyed out and it reads, "Unavailable. I go further into the Network settings the Wi-Fi row is again greyed out and it reads, No Wi-Fi.

I have tried the followed with no success in restoring Wi-Fi or BlueTooth functionality
  • Turned unit Off/On
  • Soft Reset
  • Cleared all Settings
  • Reset All Settings
  • Reloaded 2.0 Firware four times.
  • Attempted to Downgrade to 1.1.4 three times, and got the unknown error "(20)"
  • I tired each restore method using the Shift-Restore, and Restore alone with no success.
HELP! - Any one else experiencing this problem, and/or know how to resolve it?

As I won't be in my office tomorrow (Friday) I decided that AppleInsider was reliable enough to recommend the 2.0 software.

I printed out the instructions, read them several times and went to work. Voila! It worked just fine and 2.0 is happily running on my original iPhone. I reviewed the App Store and was surprised at how sincerely few real "gotta have" apps there are. AND of the apps that might be real helpers the price was between $4.99 and $9.99. What was surprising is the App Store hasn't officially opened and there are apps with scads of reviews! Isn't promotion fun?! But I AM impressed at how many different apps there are and time will dictate which will survive.

Thanks AppleInsider for helping us all out. You are a VERY valuable resource to those of is who have become reliant on Apple products.
