With the apparent activation overload bogging everything down...

Looks like the safer bet would have been to pirate a copy one day early and install before the mad rush. How's that for irony?

I started my download about 20 mins via wireless and then carefully plugged in my ethernet cable to decrease the install time which I have done successfully many times.

For some reason I wanted to ensure this change so I turned off the AirPort and got an error that the connection had been lost. hmmm.

In iTunes > Downloads, I saw the download had been halted and selected the "resume" but after nearly 75MB of prior downloading, the download for 3.0 began anew (without re-initializing the process)....

Funny thing, when I go back to iTunes > iPhone, the download button for (3.0), "Update", is no longer greyed out.

When clicked on, the update process begins with the APPLE SLA, etc. until it finally gives a -49 error message and stops.

When I check, the prior download is moving along nicely and when I go back to iTunes > iPhone, the download button for (3.0), "Update", is yet again no longer greyed out.

I tried it again and had the same experience whilst the download continues.

Just now, my iPhone just showed that a Sync in Progress message on the iPhone screen and by the time I finish this sentence, iTunes says the Apple servers are too busy to activate ....

The "Update" button is still active ... man.

That link should work for any phone. You may have to do a full restore on your phone.

My phone errored out right at the end on the install-- It took awhile (apple server errors) but it eventually restored to verison 3.0 and then from backup- All good. Just be patient.

No further issues--

Outlook Notes syncing OTA....sweet!

I bypassed this just now by having the download complete in iTunes. Then clicked update, waited as software was about 50% extracted, then unplugged ethernet. Once the "Updating Firmware" was displayed I reconnected my ethernet cable.

The download went smooth and fast. Started @ noon Pacific Time. However, for about 30 minutes, I kept getting error message that connection to activation server could not be established. Connection finally established and all is moving forward as expected.

I am also unable to activate due to server overload. Lame.

Also, I HATE Rogers Canada because they won't allow you to upgrade to the new phone until TWO YEARS into your THREE YEAR contract with them. So, I'll have to wait another year, which will probably mean skipping this generation of iPhone.

Something that bears repeating, which hasn't been discussed much is the Find My iPhone feature for MobileMe users. Please note when deactivating the feature, no password is needed. A would be thief with a little know how will be able to turn the feature off and you can say goodbye to your precious..... Password lock is still going to be your best bet to keep people out, keep your personal information safe and keep your Find My iPhone feature active......

You can upgrade. Rogers is just refusing to subsidize your new phone until you finish repaying them for your first subsidized phone. You can have the new phone if you want it, you'll just have to pay (the real price) for it.

What does it matter if a thief turns off the feature? Your phone is already stolen. If they're smart enough to turn off the find-my-iphone-feature, they're smart enough to just turn the phone off.

That's probably why it hasn't been mentioned much.

Everything went fine with my download and upgrade EXCEPT - the previous software allowed my Birthday calendar to sync over MobileMe. Did they undo that capability deliberately or just forget it??

Well crap. It still has to do the activation step after the install. So OS 3.0 is installed, but I don't have any service. Hopefully it will activate soon. I don't really like not having access to the service plan I pay to much for that doesn't include services it should. MMS and tethering, where are you? Bad call pissing off your customers that are forced to be loyal, AT&T.

The download was successful. It started to extract but when the phone needed to contact the Iphone activation server I had an error. It says it cannot be updated at this time because the iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable.
This has been like this since 2:30 EST. It is now 4:10 EST. I hope they fix the problem before the next round is release to the world.

Seems that instead of automatically including subscription calendars with MobileMe syncing - they've added the option into the iTunes sync manager. You can now sync your iPhone with both MobileMe and your computer at the same time, which allows you to sync any subscribed calendar via iTunes if not via MobileMe. Interesting solution.

But why?

The thief can just turn the phone off and then wipe it. There's no way around this.

Power cycling the phone must always be possible without supplying a password. Otherwise, phones would get bricked on a regular basis when they crash to the point of not allowing user interaction.

Just keep retrying ... I did that for about 15 minutes until I was one of the lucky ones and got through.

Seriously? Invest in a server or 2 (hundred). There is absolutely NO reason for me to be getting "server is busy, try later" message. Plan ahead! People might actually want to download the software.

Any notice how long it takes the keyboard to switch it's orientation to landscape, and back? I am using the first gen, 2g iphone and noticed this particularly when using the "Notes" app. This is with the new 3.0 OS.

there are some new icons and information in the recent calls screen

also the unknown calls are giving geographic information

got a unknown call and it said Virginia (as in the state)

i will keep looking for new features

(and going to keep mentioning that I am totally loving the bluetooth stereo upgrade until i get flamed)

My d/l was a success. Vast improvements! The camera is much clearer, Spotlight is fast, voice memo works flawlessly, Safari is far more responsive, and the iPhone is much snappier!
