itunes problem?

i have all my music saved in a folder on an external harddrive... if i go to the HD and double click on any song from there, itunes opens and its plays. If i go to itunes and try to play a song in there an error occurs that says the original file could not be found. how can I fix this?

    Go into Preferences and turn off "keep music organized" or whatever it says. Then delete all your songs. Then go to File>Add Folder and add the folder that's on your external HD
