Snow Leopard and surround sound

Apologies if this has been asked before, but will Snow Leopard and/or Quicktime X simplify 5.1 surround sound on OS X?



At the moment, it can be tricky to get everything to recognise the full surround sound (I know there are workarounds using Perian and/or VLC)



If I'm totally out of date here, and this is now a very simple task, please correct me.
