While I agree that it is more likely than not in the situation above that you're right, I disagree with it being "human nature". When something like this happens to me, my first assumption is usually that something is my fault, but I had an exception recently with one beloved company...
My 32GB 2nd generation iPod Touch sits dead on a shelf, never exposed to any liquid - but that's not what Apple says, and of course those submersion indicators must be flawless - I was made to feel as if I were a liar and such feeling does not encourage loyalty.
