Buying New Mac...Need Advice

Hello, I am buying my first Mac today. Do you think the laptop or desktop is better? Or is the Macbook Pro better than a desktop or another Macbook? Any other products should I buy with it? AppleCare warranty? I appreciate all your advice. Thank you.

I've never bought AppleCare, because I don't generally keep my macs for too long. Even so, I do have an iMac G5 that's pretty old, and it hasn't ever had a problem.

If you're going to go with a notebook I would go for the MBP 13, because it's the best investment. Otherwise I would wait until september to see if a new iMac pops up using Core i5 or whatnot. It's going to be some time yet before the Core iX chips get into notebooks, especially the smaller ones.

The MacBook you can just pick it up and go, I've found the trackpad makes an excellent substitute for a mouse and you can always plug it in to a larger monitor.

That's a matter of opinion. I prefer the Mac Mini.

You have to go with what's best for you.

    Always?

No, laptops generally have a lot less screen real estate than desktop machines. Not a problem for people who really use them as a deluxe NetBook. But it IS a problem for people wanting to do serious work on their laptops, e.g. editing images (photos, video), and soundtracks. They need all the screen real estate they can get.

No, laptops are considerably more expensive than desktop machines with similar specs. Or, put another way: you can get a much better specced desktop machine for the same money a laptop costs.

No, laptops needs to be kept charged to be useful. And working on a laptop away from the mains still gives you only a limited/finite number of hours of operation.

No, laptops' CPUs are generally not as fast as those of desktop machines. So you sacrifice speed.

No, laptops are considerably more vulnerable than desktop machines. Their average lifespan is much shorter. You'll need a replacement machine a lot sooner.

    What are your needs?

Without being rude, if you're having to ask such a vague question I'm going to assume you're not a professional user, so you simply will not 'need' a Mac Pro desktop.

So you you need to address your needs; do you want portability?

    If yes:

then I'd say either the MacBook or the MacBook Pro 13"/15"; I'd avoid the Air & 17" as they're specialist machines.

The MBPs are, IMO, vastly better machines, if you have the budget; between the two MBPs the choice is pretty much down to what size you prefer and budget.

    If no:

then you've got a choice of Mac mini or various size iMacs. The choice then is pretty much down to budget, as the specs are very similar considering there's little you're likely to do to tax any of them.

Regardless of which you go for I'd budget for extra RAM.

Applecare doesn't need to be worried about straight away, you can buy it a year from now if you want.

Come back and post what you decided on

    Hello iEugene

I think Mac Pro is better than Desktop!

As a desktop replacement, the MacBook Pro is excellent. I use a MacBook at work and with four connections (power, monitor, USB and audio) it's like I'm sitting in front of a desktop - there is no difference. For graphic design work, pick-up the size monitor you like, purchase the digital HDMI/DVI adapter, and away you go. With a USB hub, you can connect one cable to the Mac, and have your keyboard, mouse (assuming you don't use wireless), printers and external media and other USB devices all connected to the hub, saving you the hassle of connecting multiple USB devices each time!!

No difference? You mean apart from a couple of hundred pound in the system price + the cost of the monitor + keyboard + mouse +USB hub... and screen size/graphics performance??

Of course! It is also much more expensive!

FYI: a Mac Pro is not a laptop computer, but a tower computer. (http://www.apple.com/macpro/)

A MacBook Pro is a laptop.

    Yes there is! PLENTY!

Difference 1: you didn't pay for that system. Your employer did.

Difference 2: a laptop is waaay more expensive than a desktop machine with similar specs.

Difference 3: laptops have slower CPUs than desktop machines – iMacs – have.

Difference 4: laptops have smaller internal harddisks than desktop machines – iMacs – have.

Difference 5: laptops have considerably less screen real estate – much smaller screens – than desktop machines – iMacs – have.
