Would this be possible? iPhone tethering, Apple TV question.
I've recently moved to a new apartment. Comcast presented me with an outrageous bill to transfer service from my old place. I refused to pay then cancelled my account. Needless to say, I now have no internet and no cable. I have an alternate plan in the works, the thing is I don't know if it's a viable one. It involves technology I haven't used before so I'd like your help in telling me if this would work.
Basically, I want to get an iPhone 3G S. I plan to tether it to my Mac and use that for my internet. Then I'm planning to download the tv shows/movies that I want via iTunes (using the iPhone connection), and watch them with Apple TV (which I also have yet to buy). I'd like to know if there's something I've overlooked here, which would make this method not work for some reason or other? Would the 3G connection be too slow to download tv/movies? I've never owned an iPhone or Apple TV, so please enlighten me. Also, is it necessary for me to buy an HDTV in order to use Apple TV?
I've looked at other iPhone tethering threads on this forum, and arguments have gotten pretty intense about whether it's ethical/inethical to hack the iPhone for tethering purposes. Please take into account that no amount of moral "tsk tsk"ing is going to deter me from tethering if I decide that tethering is what I want to do... so if we could keep this discussion purely informational, that would be great.
I know that this plan would cost more to begin with, but it would save more for me in the long run (if it works). Any advice would be appreciated.

To enable tethering, you need to buy a bolt-on package that has a monthly fee. The speeds will also be too slow - they are around 400kbps for me, though it can go up to 1.4Mbps or so. At 400k, a 1GB itunes movie would take about 5-6 hours to download.
Then you have usage limits. mobile networks have very low caps on them so you can only get say 3GB (depending on the carrier) per month and they charge per MB you go over.
If you have a friendly neighbour nearby, you can maybe propose a broadband sharing option to them and say you will pay half the cost, then setup an encrypted wifi router that you can access.
Sorry to hear it would take that long to download video, though I somewhat expected it...
I thought there was no option to include tethering with AT&T? Or is there some other party that I wasn't aware of that I'd have to pay that monthly fee to?
I think AT&T are going to be offering it later on. I'm not sure when though.
