Regular Kernel Panics

I have been experiencing Kernel Panics rather too frequently lately, twice a week or so. Most of the time it won't wake from sleep but occasionally it's the onscreen message telling me to restart



20" 2.4 Alu iMac running 10.5.8



Any help appreciated. I have tried permissions, SMC & PRAM. The hardware test I ran a while back came up with nothing

The most common cause of frequent kernel panics is a hardware issue of some sort, often bad RAM. Have you installed any?

I've had 4GHz of Crucial RAM I installed when new, about 18 moths ago.



I took out one stick but didn't get past the blue screen on boot-up.

Am now trying the other on it's own but I've a feeling I'll be sending a faulty stick back to Crucial for replacement, if I can find the receipt.

You're doing the right thing by trying them individually. If you've got the original factory RAM on hand, you could try that too.

It was a driver from ximeta that caused the panic that you pasted in your first post.

I have temporarily removed the NDAS Utility from the Application folder, which is where this driver was. I shall report back in a few days.

Actually, drivers are kernel extensions and are stored in /System/Library/Extensions/, or other library locations such as /Library/Application Support/SomeApp/. The extension will have been put there either when you installed the NDAS utility or when you first ran it; moving the application will not have affected the kernel extension. The kernel extension is loaded dynamically as needed. Presumably, you have some NAS device from ximeta? For some reason, OS X needs a hardware driver to use said NAS device which is a bit odd.



To see if the ximeta kext is currently loaded in the kernel, launch terminal and type (or copy and paste)

and press return. If it's not loaded, you'll just be returned straight to the command line; if it is loaded, there will be one or more lines printed to the command line that look similar to this:

If the ximeta kext is not loaded, mount your NAS and run the command again.

I don't have a NAS device, just two external WD drives, one via USB, the other Firewire.



There is an Apple Extreme base station connected but no hard drive onto that - just an HP printer (which I am disconnecting now)

Surely you installed it at some point? Certainly, it's not part of OS X. And if the kernel extension crashed, it must have been doing something (e.g. talking to hardware) at the time.

Not knowingly, some device may have - that's what I'm trying to establish

Just before the last panic I heard one of the hard drives spin up, then Kernel FAIL



Have updated the firmware from the WD site to see if there are any changes to the current routine

Did the external HDDs come with software that you subsequently installed? If you're using them as normal external HDDs, you shouldn't need any extra software for them to work. Try fishing out the install CD that came with the hard drives and see if it's got an uninstaller.

I never use the software that comes with WD drives, just delete it and format to Extended Journaled

Have updated the firmware to the latest version and have been ejecting all external drives when inactive for any long periods.



I caved in on Friday and installed SL and so far have had no recurrences. Fingers tightly crossed
