Agreed.

I like their first album best, but the "Island in the Sun" video is the coolest thing I've seen on MTV in years!

Weezer? a little too safe & conformist diluted corporate punk for me. They don't stand up to repeated listening on record...one listen and that's just about it...there's nothing more to tickle the ears. Live is another story tho... saw them recently...loud noisy and lotsa fun!

That really goes to show how widely musical tastes can vary.

That type music (Weezer, Blink 182, Green Day) holds up best for me. If I'm busy doing something and want music in the background I put one of those CD's on repeat and it never gets on my nerves.

    Maybe I'm just getting old...

They were emo before emo existed. Sure its the poppiest emo you'll ever hear, but they set the stage for where punk is now, IMHO.

Weezer is not emo, nor are they punk. Weezer is a rock and roll band, thats it. Read any interviews from them and you'll see they really don't like being labeled as "emo". I wouldn't classify Weezer in the same group as Blink 182 or Green Day. Both of those bands went around calling themselves punk and then sold out (for lack of a better term). Weezer sold out the day they made their first album

Anytime a band becomes mainstream they lose the essence of what true "punk rock" is supposed to be. I think the same can be said about emo.

I think a lot bands get labeled terms that they don't even like. Last time I went to a Get Up Kids show they specifically said "we're not hardcore, we're not emo, we're rock and roll". But then again, they WANT to be rock stars. So they're preparing their fans for the eventual sellout when they hit the big time.

I just realized that I'm going off on a tangent and I'm not even sure if I made a point anymore. heh

Anywho.....I have no problem with any band becoming mainstream. You gotta put bread on the table somehow, as long as you don't lose your integrity doing it. (i.e. changing your style of music just to make it appealing to the masses)

If you want to hear a true example of a "dyi" never going to sell out, kick ass band, check out Fugazi. They make music because they love it, and not to make a buck.

    Ok, I'll shut up now

I actually agree with you, and honestly that is part of why I love Weezer so much. You're right, they aren't a punk band, or an emo band. But if you listen to the Blue Album, and then you listen to older SDRE, Jimmy Eat World, or Get Up Kids, or most other mainstream emo (in spite of The Get Up Kid's denial, their style of music falls fits the musical requisites for emo (which is a subset of rock, so I'm not sure what the big deal is)) you will notice that their sound has a significant amount of similarity to the Blue Album. I'm not saying this to put down any of these bands, all of which I think are leading the way for the next revolution in mainstream rock, but just that Weezer was doing in 1994 (in the mainstream biz no less!) what has just now started creeping out of the underground.

As far as selling out goes, whether a band has "sold out" or not doesn't effect my judgment of what kind of music they are making. I categorize music by how it sounds, not by the posturings of the band.

Emo is Sunny Day Real Estate.

If you are currently a teenager going through teenager find Sunny Day Real Estate's "How it Feels to be Something On", namely the songs "Two Promises" (<- especially if you're madly in love with a girl who doesn't know or are recently broken up)

    "Days Were Golden" for anytime.

"Every Shining Time you Arrive" for more unrequited love goodness.

I totally agree. I picked up on a little band called 311 when their first album came out. A friend worked at a record store and one day just randomly pulled it out and said "lets see how this sounds". We loved it. Like 5 years later they hit, BIG. All the little teenie boppers got into them but even though it annoyed me, I didn't stop listening.

I hope you're right about the next revolution in rock. I'm not all that thrilled with the current state of things. (Incubus, Staind, System of a Down).

I think all the little 14 year olds listening to

Britney and N'Sync are going to bust out their sweaters, thick glasses, dye their hair jet black and bring emo into the mainstream when they hit 17....hah.

Ahhhhh Sunny Day, I love that band. Have you heard the lead singer's solo stuff? I can't recall his name right now, but its REALLY good.
