No. First off a lot of people get spoofed. One of our UNIX boxes was used to send a bunch of porn spam. Mail bombing and/or hacking us would do no good.
Another thing is that the "reply to" addresses on most spam are either A) not valid addresses, or somebody ELSE'S address besides the person who sent it. So if you just hit "reply" and curse the person out, and then re-send the message 510 times with a 12 gigabyte binary attached each time, you'll just end up wasting a lot of your time while your curses and mail bombs bounce right off their invulnerable spammer hide.
Man, I hate that whole scene: spamming and telemarketing.
Seems to me that if you WANT a service, you'd go to them. And as for them advertising, there's a gazillion ways they can do it other than cramming your e-mail inbox full of useless crap or calling you at YOUR HOUSE as you're trying to eat dinner or spend time with your loved one(s).
For whatever reason, the ball is put into OUR court to have to deal with this nuisance and hassle, instead of the practice being clobbered hard by lawmakers.
I mean, honestly...would ANY of us cry and handwring if we weren't notified 4-9 times a day about "EARN $4000 IN 30 MINUTES!!!" and so forth?

i think, in my hotmail account, that for every page of mail, there is only 1 real email intended for me to read from someone i know. the rest i just let hotmail delete on its own after it runs over the size limit...

It is hard to track them down,I've really become annoyed with it.Fortunately,they have only gotten my Hotmail account but I get close to 50 unsolicited messages a day and only one or two from legitimate sources,it seems to have gotten a lot worse in the past few months.A large number of them have no link to unsubsccribe,and I have unsubscribed to a number,but still receive mail from them.The most obnoxious ones are the porn spam I get,impossible to track down because,as Scott H. has said,they are spoofing addresses.But I think I am going to start keeping records and then track down their ISPs and lodge a complaint,and if nothing happens in that case I am going to contact INTERNIC.Does anyone know exactly what the laws are regarding spamming? I would love to retaliate, but it's often useless as others have noted here. I have 12+ email addresses for different reasons. But I have a core of 4 addresses described below ending with my most personal address:
1. (fake). For any BS I have to register for that I don't give a rat's a** about.
2. My <a href="http://www.expireit.com/"; target="_blank">expireit</a> accounts. For all one time uses/web registrations. There is a Mac application for this service. This is much easier that constantly changing Yahoo accounts.
3. Yahoo account. One for all online ordering and legit sites that won't spam me. This is nice cause I can check it at work or home.
4. My ISP account. For my friends and family. I never sign up for anything with this account.
I should note I have an old ISP account that was getting hit hard with spam. I solved that problem easily. At first I filtered everything with Emailer, but that became tedious. So I made a procmailrc filter which resides in the unix server space and it automatically trashes or rejects all mail not properly addressed to me. Setting that up was a godsend. To get an idea of how much spam that account was getting I will tell you I've had that account for 7 years...
Uh, Rick1138, the reason you get shitloads of spam is BECAUSE you try to 'unsubscribe'. By doing so, you are verifying that you account is real and used, and you are recieving spam. If you never reply, it's possible that it is a dead account.
I think a lot of the spam sent out HOPES you try to 'unsubscribe', as they are not in fact selling anything, but rather scavenging for emails so they can sell them for $$$ to other spammers.
And yes, the penalty for spamming should be death.

I rarely get any spam. All sketchy sites I use a Hotmail account (where I get about 50 spam messages a day), but most large places (Apple, Microsoft, NetFlix), I just put in my Mac.com address. I get maybe one or two unsolicited emails a month.
I don't get it...when I signed up for Hotmail, even before I sent any emails or used the account address for anything, I started getting spam. Does Microsoft give out it's email addresses or what?
What's kind funny is I made a yahoo mail account to try and get spam sent too. The catch is I used a really obscene username. I put in newsgroups and such and I get almost no spam. I could care less with that account if I got 100 messages a day, but maybe I get 5 every 2 weeks.
I live in the state of Washington where there is an antispam law. For every unsolicited eMail (spam) that has an ineffective or non existant unsubscribe you may sue for $50 an eMail. So far the only stumbling block is takeing the time to trace back the spam and having a lawyer to handle the suits. I am looking forward daily to an unsolicited advertisement offering a service to do the tracking and sueing for a 10% fee. :cool:
As far as attacking the spammer - it can be very effective if done properly. Unfortunately you would then fall under the new terrorisim law which could get you a life sentence for hacking. Hmmm. I don't know about Washington,but in most states you don't need a lawyer to sue in small calims court.I'm going to see if there is a similar law in Delaware.
Considering I get upwards of 50 spam eMails a day, I don't have the time to trace them all down, but a lawyer that gets a number of clients would. Gee, I found something that a lawyer is good for.
