ATI 5870 for Mac - release date estimate?
I'm seeing reports on the net about a new ATI GPU, the 5870, which looks to become the newest speed champ. Some reports claim a release date of September 23rd. However they say nothing about a Mac model.
Any idea on how long after the PC release we can expect a Mac version?

I'm curious what you base your reply on.... is it based on the past release schedule of other ATI cards?
I base that on the notions that Apple will update something in January, and that Apple doesn't care at all about high-end graphics.

Random guess. I figured March would provide enough time to work out a deal of sorts and if not at that time then near summer. Apple doesn't want to be too far behind.
The 5870 Six, by the way, has six mini-DisplayPort ports. It's the card that was driving AMD's six monitor 7680x3200 demo.

Looks like it was launched today. From what I have read, this is a game changing card. It is like the switch from Pentiums to the Duo Core line in terms of performance. I would love one of these in my Mac Pro.

Eh... it's a doubling of performance over the previous generation, but that's quite normal for graphics. We expect a new high-end card to be at least twice as fast as the previous high-end card. So by that standard, it's not really a "game changer", it's exactly what people expected.
What wasn't expected was the friggin' miracle ATI has worked on power consumption- twice the performance for lower idle and load power than the last card. It's quieter and runs cooler, too. So that's great.
What we don't know is how Nvidia's next-gen high-end will perform. Or when it will be out.
Wake me up when the 5850 is standard on new iMac models running the i5 or better.
Apple: NVIDIA, you've been good to us in our portables and Ima let you finish, but ATI just released the best performing single chip graphics card ever at half your power!
As to this chip, it is almost a certainty that Apple won't bother until OpenCL compatibility is firmed up. I could see OpenCL actually holding up adoption of new GPUs, this due to the additional software required to drive the GPU.
One interesting possibility is Apple adopting the chip for the iMac. With it's native low power and a bit of underclocking this might make an excellent SFF / all in one, GPU.

40nm, temperatures and power at load all look very good.
Nvidia's 300 series? Their 40nm tech? Nowhere to be seen. Nary a whisper to the roar that ATI sounded with the 5870/5850.
The 9400M was great but the fact is the GTX280etc based cards ARE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO GO MOBILE, they have to rely on rebranding the 9 series which are rebranded 8 series. At least until and even then, if suitable, Nvidia's 300 series.
You might get an card from a 3rd party vendor like EVGA earlier for the Mac Pro.
