O2 announced today that the GSM Palm Pre will be launching in Europe in the middle of next month. The staggered release will see Germany getting their hands on the hot little smartphone on October 13th, with the United Kingdom and Ireland getting it on October 16th. Yup, that announcement really did come quickly.

Let's start with the good news: The Palm Pre will be Quad-Band on GSM and Tri-Band 3G. The devil's in the details, but it this case it's angels

* Palm Pre GSM Bands: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

* Palm Pre UMTS/HSDPA Bands: 850 / 1900 / 2100

Those bands, as ToniCipriani in our forums corrected predicted, support both European and US 3G on AT&T. Cheers and adulation.

So Palm, which is supposed to be inferior to Apple in every fashion has already created CDMA and GSM versions of their WebOS phones. This has happened in less than a year.

Where the hell is Apple on this? Oh they are the ones who are ignoring millions of potential customers while letting all their U.S. iPhone customers scream bloody murder about AT&T.

Clearly the engineering to support the two different standards involves very little work. However perhaps even a little work is starting to become too much for Apple who appear content to sit on their ass lately. iPod Shuffle unchanged.... check. iPod Touch with no camera... check. iPhone unable to access CDMA networks to provide competition for plans and services and more customers... check.

    Palm can do this because its what they planned from the start.

    Apple has not because they never had any intention of making a CDMA phone, from the day they walked on Verizon.

    Apple went with GSM and planned to stay that way until CDMA dies under the incorporation of WiMax and LTE.

    Even if planned from the start, Palm can accomplish in months what Apple has not gotten done in years.

    Rumors about Apple making a deal in China often involve claims of a CDMA phone. It isn't just about Verizon. It is about being competitive. Apple has the smart side of the smartphone down pat. It is the phone side they need to work on.

    All prior standards will eventually die under the incorporation of WiMax and LTE. However progress must remain steady and deal with what can be done now and in the future as well.
