Gizmodo reviews WinMo 6.5... and are less than kind about it:

On top of that, there's no way to tell how many apps you have, to delete them, or to tell which "Page" of the start menu you're on. The offset icon spacing is awkward and occasionally ugly... This whole piece feels half-assed, to put it kindly.

Here's the menu on WinMo 6.5 (Can you tell wtf is going on here?)

It's pretty scathing. MS is clearly way behind iPhone, Android and Palm's WebOS, in fact even behind BlackBerry. WinMo 7 had better be very special and here soon, otherwise MS are going to be quickly insignificant on the mobile scene.

That would be bad news for all smartphone users because it means there would be less competition. More competition means lower prices and better products for consumers. Less competition means higher prices and worse products for consumers.

That's true generally speaking, but I don't think the SmartPhone arena is the worst place in the world for competition - Android is really the new Windows, because it can be used on many handsets. BlackBerry has a variety of handset types and functionality, WebOS looks like it will be on a few different handsets. Sony and Nokia offer something different for the truly brave; and of course iPhone is like the Mac, self contained eco-system.

If MS dropped out, I don't see competition being wiped out... there are still 5 or 6 in the mix (more than there are viable Operating Systems in the shops). However if MS want to survive the beyong the next decade, they probably need to think beyond the desktop.
