kernel_task using over 100% cpu in 10.6

ever since i upgraded to snow leopard activity monitor reports that kernel_task remains at over 100% at all times closely followed by fontworker which will occasionally jump to near 100% and when doing nothing font related. should the kernel_task be using over 100% of my cpu power at all times, this isn't normal is it?
