iPhone screen repair issues - DIY question

I have an 8GB iPhone 3G. Just recently, the bottom half of my screen (when held vertically) went dead. This sounds like the well-reported screen "dead zone" issue. After attempts at phone "rest" and restore, I brought the phone in to an Apple store. Since my phone was out of warranty, the store folks offered to repair the screen for $200. I opted to sign up for a new 2-year commitment and get a new 32GB 3GS. But that's a different story.

Now I have the 8GB 3G that I'd like to gift to my daughter as a mock iTouch, but need to fix the screen. I saw a couple of sights selling components for no more than $30-$40 and I'm willing to do that. I only need some guidance of what part(s) I will need to purchase.

My question:

What minimally needs to be replaced when you experience a "dead zone" on the screen? I saw a YouTube screen repair demo that seemed to indicate different parts for the a) glass screen, b) LCD input device, c) etc. etc. etc. I'm looking for specific advice so that I don't order more or less than is needed. NOTE: My screen glass is NOT shattered. The iPhone is like new only with a dead zone covering the lower half of the screen when held vertically.

    Before rushing into replacing screen try this first:

    have a small strip of adhesive tape;

    apply the tape to the screen to make a "knob" like this

    ____/\\____ adhesive tape

    ======== iPhone screen

    pull gently the knob;

    remove the tape;

    repeat all above several times applying the tape to different zones of the screen.

    But frankly, mate... If you can not see what I've given you, if you've got no least clue how it's working, if you can't use search engines, please give it up. Please.

    Go to the shop and let professionals do the job for you.

    Dude!

    Il n'y a pas de raisons pour ecrire ces choses! J'ai demande quelle partie il faut acheter. Il ya le verre, le digitizer, le LCD, l'ecran complet. Je dois remplacer quoi exactement???

    Je le jetterai au lieu de payer plus que $50. Je peut acheter un refurb pour un peu plus que ca.

    Ta premiere idee etait bonne, mais ca n'a pas marche. Dommage.

    Hope you're in a better mood now. Too bad your advice did not work out this time.

    Bon. J'ai tout essayé pour sauver ton iPhone, mon pote. C'est bien sûr le convertisseur analogique-numérique ("le digitizer"), qu'il te faut.

    Allez. Courage pour la suite.
