Startup Issues - Overheating maybe?

So, my 15 inch 2.4 Intel Core2 MacBook Pro, with Tiger, did something weird last night. I was watching a video without any problems, then put the laptop on my lap to continue what I was doing. After a few minutes, the computer froze (though the audio of the movie kept running) and pink and green lines, made up of little dots (more or less pixel-sized) appeared all over the screen.

I turned the computer off, then restarted. It starts up and, instead of the gray startup screen, the screen is light blue and pink in sort of a plaid pattern. The Apple logo and startup gear (or what have you) appear, and then when it seems like the time that I should see my desktop, the screen goes completely black, but the computer does not turn off.

So, I am thinking this might be an overheating problem; I leave it out overnight, open, on top of two bread pans (for ventilation and heat sinking) but in the morning, although the machine is cold to the touch, it does exactly the same thing.

I am at work right now, and will try to get it working again when I get home. But, does anyone know what could be causing this, and what a good solution might be?

(I checked the FAQs and searched but couldn't find anything--if someone has already asked this same question, please just point me in the direction of that thread)

Well, I ran the hardware check, and it turns out I have a video card logic board problem, with the error code 4VDC/1/40000003.

But the good news is, since I got the computer less than three years ago, Apple will cover repair or replacement of the GeForce 86000M GT that has been found to be defective.
