My ibook powerpc g3 Mac OS10.4 do not connect to the internet

I just get this mac ibook and did not came with the airport card, I brought one airport wireless card and install it but I can not get network access. Do I really need a airport station for connect to the internet? can I connect to a network differ than a apple network?

    Airport cards connect to standard networks but your version might not support newer encryption standards like WPA. Try turning off any encryption on the wifi network and connecting. It'll support WEP encryption.
