New iMacs Run 10.5?

I'm thinking of getting a new iMac soon. I currently have an external drive I use as a backup with 10.5 installed on it.

Can I use my external drive with 10.5.8 installed on it as a start-up disc for the new iMacs or do I need to purchase 10.6?

Thanks

All new imacs will come with 10.6.* and normally won't run any system version below which they come with.

Any new Mac comes with the latest version of the operating system and iLife pre-installed. Look at http://www.apple.com/store

You can use the migration wizard to copy data to your new machine including licensed applications, user accounts, etc. Just don't create a new account on the new machine with a conflicting name before you get started.
