iPhone vs Google Nexus

This is one main reason why my money is on Google to come on top of the mobile phone war. It's Google's business model: Keep everything free to consumer. Let me repeat that, every product Google offers to its consumer is free or they will make no profit off the consumer (In the case of the Nexus One).

Google isn't worried about cannibalizing of other versions of Android on different phones. The more the merrier in their opinion. They will be selling phones with no interest in making any money from the consumer. Google's business model is to be as closely connected to the consumer so they can charges business' for access to that consumer. That is what Google does.

If Google could, they would give wireless, electricity, and phones all away for free to consumers. Google's only concern is it's connection to the consumer and trying to improve the overall experience of the consumer. It's a beautiful business model. How can consumers complain about something that is free? That is why Google's brand is even more pristine then Apple's. Then they make a boat load of money off off B2B.

How will Apple complete with a company that doesn't want to make any profit directly from the consumer? Apple makes hardware/software decisions that hurt user experience to maximize profits. This is definitely going to hurt Apple's bottom line in the long run. If you have Apple stock this may be a good time to sell.

I don't think so. Did research before my purchase to either choose an Iphone or Google G1 and I went for the Iphone because judging by Apple's way in the industry, I trust them more.

No Google's goal is to show you ads that are brought by companies who want you to buy their products, but at some point companies will notice, some have already, that they can by pass Google and have their own mobile app and directly connect with their customers. If Google can't control mobile ads, and it isn't a sure thing that they will, they are in real trouble that's why they are getting into these new areas: phones, browsers, desktop OS to try and keep the money flowing in.

That only works in a limited sense. Yes, some companies have and will find that making their own apps allows them to connect with their customers directly. But, that is not the same as advertising. At best, it is a form of direct marketing, which is different. For example, how to you inform your customers that the app is available? Through advertising.

Google's expertise is in advertising. Mobile ad companies allow any developer to generate additional income through the apps, simply by including the API of the ad company in their app. This then allows them to potentially reduce the price of their apps or release them for free. As importantly, these mobile ad APIs allow for collecting metrics on usage. Whether this is data on click throughs, frequency and duration that apps are loaded, type of usage, etc. This information is important to advertisers to determine the success of their campaigns, but is also important to analysts.

Anyhoo, with Apple's acquisition of Quattro, it will be interesting to see how deeply Apple embeds their API into the iPhone SDK and to see if the continue to allow it to run cross platform. The metrics it collects will be less useful if it is limited to only one platform. A service that allows developers and advertisers to see how their campaigns are performing across demographics like platform is fairly important.

It will also be interesting to see how the tin-hatters who have been so vocally anti-Google, because they are an ad firm and are therefore automatically suspect/guilty of collecting and misusing personal information, will react to Apple now being an advertising company. I am guessing most will rationalize/excuse it as ok, simply because it is Apple.

I don't think strategy will necessary determine who wins the smartphone wars. It will be the culture associated with the strategy. Which ever strategy generates the most innovation will win the war.

Apple are winning this at the moment when it comes to app development but ther eis also the need for OS innovation and here the question will be whether Apple's closed development approach will be more innovative than Google's open source development approach.

We also need to think about market segment.

Blackberry will take a lot of unseating in the business market

It will be easier to unseat Apple in the high end comsumer market

The low end consumer market is wide open and probably always will be.

I'm a Nexus One user (sorry Iphone users) but i really have to say that the big difference with Iphone 4 is the screen resolution, my best friend is and iphone4 user and we have done some test to tell which one is better.

Also sometimes dont know why, browser scrolling is smoother in iphone4, for everything else i wouldn't change my nexus one, but this is just my opinion i guess Iphone4 user would also defende their phones.
