Hard drive image problem

Hello,

I wanted to upgrade to a larger external hard drive so I created an image of the original using disk utility. The image created no problem but now that I try and save the image to the new hard drive I get a file structure error.

The worst part is the old external was converted to a time machine drive and my original data now only exists in the image so I would really appreciate if anyone could help me get my data back

Thank you

Sounds like you need to re-format the new drive before you can write the image to it.

Do you recall the format of the HDD you made the image from?

If it was an OSX start-up, it was likely GUID.

The original format was Mac OS Extended but when I run restore in disk utility it says I need to scan the image file before restore. The scan lasts about an hour and at about the 90% point it gives a file structure not found error

The error now says Unable to scan "disk name" internal error

Does this mean my data is gone for good?
