How to run a 3yr old Macbook with lid closed?

With external monitor attached, Macbook goes into sleep mode when I close the lid, even when its AC attached. Any idea how to disable that so I can run with lid closed on VGA monitor?

    after the display goes off just push a button on a usb keyboard or usb mouse and it will come back on.
