So where is iPhone OS 3.2...for iPhone?
So I have been an iPhone user from the very beginning. I had the original iPhone for 2 years, and then I upgraded to the 3GS. I have never regretted this purchase, although almost from the beginning I have been hoping to see the OS evolve and mature over time. While it has improved some here and there, I want bigger changes. I want additional ways that are Apple-approved to customize my phone. I want to be able to change the color of text message bubbles like in iChat, I want to the ability to change the background image of my home screen (not just the lock/unlock screen) or even full fledged themes that we can choose from similar to Summerboard and Springboard, and I would like a newer way to navigate between the various app windows and home screens. I shouldn't have to jailbreak my phone for this. The iphone was light years ahead of everyone else when it came out, but the competition is catching up. We need something new!
I had decided that Apple had no interest in adding background screens or themes, until I saw the iPad. I was stunned at this development, and a little pissed off that we didn't get it simultaneously. It is basically the same interface on a bigger screen. So if, they can do it for the iPad, they can easily do it for the iphone. I hope that this will be a new feature in the next OS update, but I guess we will have to wait and see. It's just annoying that the iPad is running iPhone software that I want, and it isn't even an iPhone.
What is the plan here Apple? If you guys in cupertino don't want to bother with coding for themes, then let app store developers come up with something. I'm sure they will do an amazing job. We just want more customization. We need it!

I don't think 3.2 will ever see the light of day.
It is simply a placeholder OS - allowing developers to create tablet applications before the introduction of the tablet itself.
My guess is that the real deal will be OS 4.0. And that will be announced in the next 60 days - coinciding with the announcement of the new iPhone.
The first iPads will be sold with 4.0 installed.
Apple do not want to announce 4.0 now. Because to do so would crush demand for the 3GS iPhone. iPhone sales tail-off when the market gets wind of something new on the way. There is no need to encourage that.

I agree with everything that you said except this. iPhone demand may sag in anticipation of new hardware, but not in anticipation of new software. Every iPhone ever sold will run the latest version of the iPhone OS. I bought the first iPhone on the day it went on sale. I have the latest version of iPhone OS installed. It is the same OS installed on my iPhone 3GS. What separates the two phones is that the newer model has additional and more powerful hardware features.
Lest there be any confusion, every new version of the iPhone OS has been a free upgrade.

If the new iPhone OS includes features which clearly go with new hardware features - then Apple cannot release the software to developers without letting the cat out of the bag. Forward camera support, multi-core CPU support etc.
My guess is that iPhone OS4 will debut with the new phone, and we will see an aggressive update of the both the OS and the hardware.

Although a new iPhone OS arrives on *all* phones, many software features don't materialise on the older handsets. For instance MMS does not work on the first generation iPhone.

That doesn't seem to be a problem for many people. When 3.0 came out with the 3GS, lots just updated their 1st and 2nd gen iPhones to mainly get cut and paste and a few other goodies, but passed on upgrading hardware to get the 3Gs' goodnesses. (It's late... I've started making up words)

You are reaching for a point. Assuming that everything you say here is true--and I do assume that it is true--nothing that you have said supports your "theory" that iPhone OS 4.0 may cannibalize sales of a new iPhone.

You might be right. But I will try to explain my thinking.
Apple would prefer to launch the iPad with OS4.
In fact, they would have preferred to announce the iPad with OS4.0
When the iPad ships - it may come with OS4 (or not depending on the timing)
But if Apple handed out 4.0 SDKs to developers today, then many hardware features of the new iPhone would be revealed. Such details would stifle demand for the current iPhone model.
So OS3.2 is a halfway house. It allows developers to create iPad apps while keeping the new stuff secret. This is supported by the fact that there is no 3.2 for iPhone.
That's the theory, I guess we have to wait to see if it's right or not.

Explained in this way, your theory is more plausible. For years, however, people have gleaned OS X code for hints about new hardware without much success.
For iPhone (all models) and iPod Touch.
Various fixes.
iPhone OS 3.1.3 is out!
For iPhone (all models) and iPod Touch.
Various fixes.
Unfortunately no new features, just bug fixes. I can wait until Summer for 4.0, as long as we get 3.2 soon with some delicious new customization features. We'll see.
One positive...
After carefully scouring the internets for reports of issues with 3.1.3, I did finally update both mine and my wife's 3Gs to 3.1.3 with no issues. Both phones seem happy so far. This is saying a lot considering Apple's OS update issues of late. I hope the majority of quality issues are in the past.

Another day, another person who thinks the iPhone customer base knows anything about its software/hardware release schedule.
The 0.1% who spends their day on Apple forums do not count.
