Ultimate proof that CNN is totally US-centric
"For World News, Watch CNN" ... more like "For World News as told by the USA watch us"
So what am I bitching about now? I just got a BreakingNews email that said "-- Country singer Waylon Jennings dies at his Arizona home."
I am speechless. First: I have NO IDEA who this person is and while I feel sorry for him, I CANNOT understand how this ranks with "Planes crash into Pentagon and TwinTowers", "Anthrax Scare in USA", and heck, even the rediculous news that Bush was overwhlemed by a frikken pretzel.
Why don't they talk about how today yet again a hundred people got massacred in Sierra Leone for the diamonds which are controlled by DeBeers and others... or the various other civil wars... or whatever.
I already get enough crap in my mail box and now I have to get a BREAKING NEWS (THE Authority... no?) that a country music person, who probably more than half the Americans didnt even know existed either, had died.
Gimme a damn break

I don't even like country music that much, but Waylon was one of the greats. He started out playing in Buddy Holly's band.
Were you equally as angry that George Harrison's death meant less air time for Sierra Leone?
Don't sign up for American services if you don't like things related to America.
Seems like simple logic to me.
(when i say "we" i refer to americans)
Yes, CNN covers world news, but it's an American-based network, the vast majority of its employees are American, and the vast majority of its viewers are American.
Still, I signed up for the most BASIC of BreakingNews services... the one where only IMPORTANT WORLD news... yes, news that could have a GLOBAL impact. Country music is definetly not a global concern.
Heck, even if Bono or Madonna or Limp Bizket all were to be involved in some sort of tragedy I wouldnt want to have it known via BreakingNews. I want to know things that could actually make a difference in my life and potentially to millions or billion of other people.
CNN is US based, yes, but they dont do anything else but try to reaffirm that they are the voice of the world, that they take news from every perspective, etc.
Bullocks. Heck, look, now they even started cnnarabic.com so that they won't have to rely on Al Jazeera network.
It scares me that such a global and influential voice is a part of a huge corporation which is source for tons of bias (look at how successful Harry Potter was... CNN was plastered with it for weeks).
Reliable global information should be as independent and far away from corporations as possible.
Scott... nice friendly jab... I am, for umteenth time, American too.
Roger... I guess I do need more fiber
If you want European news, go to the BBC or Aljazeera... You should definitely get fair and balanced reporting from Aljazeera.
60 albums, 16 #1 singles, participation in one of the genre's truly groundbreaking albums, membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame, friendships and musical collaborations with Nelson, Kristofferson, Cash, Williams and others.
And he knew and played with Buddy ****ing Holly, pal.
So there.
Rates a "breaking news" announcement in my book.

Marketing.
Did you know coke is the world's favorite soft drink?
Marketing.
Making money.
Marketing.
"World reporting" [assertion] -> higher Nielsen ratings -> higher ad revenue [except ad rev's are flat now, but that's another story] -> more money -> more marketing.
Marketing.

Umm, excuse me. Americans are very knowledgeable - they know exactly who Waylon Jennings is. Are you insulting our intelligence?
We know all the important people, like Britney Spears, Madonna's children's names, and the entire cast of Friends. So stop trying to say we're ignorant.
(So we don't know unimportant people like Cheney, Aschroft, and Verhofstadt. What does that prove?)
That was a pretty dumb post BR. Do you even deny you are a self-hating American?

actually, it was nothing more than the truth. the average american is an idiot.

Hey ZO. Get a life. Preferably in your own boring stupid country for God's sake. Waylon Jennings was a legend in country music. Only Johnny Cash is left and Faith Hill is the bitch of country bullshit you hear now on the radio. You have a problem with CNN and American News? So do I. It's all bullshit. Most people here will bow to all of Bill O'Reilly's spittle. But that's not my fault or yours...so shut up.
Well i didn't even know Modonnah had any children and I don't know the cast of friends. Does that make me even dumber than the 'idiots' who do? Although I DO know who all the others (Cheney, Aschroft, and Verhofstadt) are and what they do. Generalizations and stereotyping are only one step away from blatant racism, I know that's hard to swallow but it's true.

no, the point was that most americans choose to only know stupid and pointless facts...
dude, yer kinda dense today...
