Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters

MonoPrice carries two Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters. Product 5311, for $8.55, carries this admonition:

*NOTE** AUDIO:* This adapter will support audio only if your source device allows audio output through the Mini DisplayPorts interface.* If you're not sure, please check with the manufacturer or website to confirm if your device allows audio out through the Mini-DP interface.

Does anyone know if either or both the newer Mac Mini or iMac allow audio output?

Product 4852, for $6.94, states:

* Please note that mini-DVI is a designed as a*video output*only, and will not send audio.

That seems to contradict the above NOTE.

BTW, the URLs for these adapters are:

There are no Apple products that support audio over the MDP port. You will need to connect audio separately. In addition to the MDP output of all currently shipping Macs, this is also true of the MDP input on the ACD and iMac.

If you want to integrate audio into the HDMI signal when connecting to a display that supports it, you can get an adapter from Kanex that supports stereo audio over USB ($60) or digital 5.1 audio via the audio out port ($70). You'll still have to plug 2 or 3 plugs into your MAc, but you'll only have one thing to plug in on the other end. For the price, it just doesn't seem worthwhile.

You may as well buy the adapter at Monoprice, and get an audio cable to attach separately.

    That's what I did. For the price it's a no-brainer.

Thanks guys, I always know where to go for good advice.

BTW, Vinea, you were somewhat instrumental in getting me to think about an AIO iMac. Now that I purchased one, I couldn't be more content. Thanks for helping me to get my head out of my a__.
