Indian tensions
As of today about 250 people dead. It all started when Hindu activists went to petition the erection of a hindu temple on the site where in 1992 a mosque was destroyed because it was built on the sacred land of the birth of a hindu god. On the return trip a muslim mob torched a train full of hindu activists; about 58 dead. Then riots erupted, as hindus took revenge by burning muslim homes and businesses. Then muslims did the same, and blah blah blah, cycle of violence, blah blah. The violence is spreading across the whole country.
Here's my opinion on it: I don't know the circumstances of the destruction of the mosque but it's my understanding no one was killed. It was just a slap in the face but that's not the point. Now hindus want to built on top of the site and people are getting miffed. What's the big effing deal? get over it. Build another mosque. It's not like they haven't done their own share of destroying other religious sacred sites.

And also, I think that Catholics are really the minority as far as Christian sects in the US go . . . but are not a small group at all.
but I agree this religious warfare reveals the fact that religion is whatever allows one to believe they should have the right of way. "God bless (insert nation of choice here)" no, no "god bless us our (insert nation of choicehere)"
What's so awfull is that Hinduism for centuries has been a religion that can thrive off of the assimilation of, or open relationship to, other religions, it is very adaptable. But with intense proselytic monotheisms that eneter an area and then start demanding that everyone in that area conform to the strictures of its rules, the Hindus have started to become fanatical. Something that doesn't really jibe with the openness intrinsic to its foundations as a religion. Its terrible, But many people see it as partialy the fault of the influx of a monotheism that wants everybody to conform to its rule (islam) I don't know what to think about it, just reporting what an Indian friend told me.

Religions were only meant to instill some spiritual guidance and maybe leading one to a better life...now it's just for political and personal gain....sad. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
