MacMail Get Mail button

On my old computer, w/Tiger, when I would click the "Get Mail" button, there was a spinner next to the Inbox that let me know that MacMail was looking for mail to download.

On my new iMac w/SL, that spinner is conspicuous with its absence.

I've looked through Mail Preference, but there doesn't seem to be a toggle to bring the spinner back. I can have a 'sound' let me know if there isn't any new mail, but I still would like the spinner.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

For details you can use the Activity Window. Or you can show the Mail Activity pane below your Mailbox list. Click the middle icon (the one with the triangle) at the bottom left of the Mail window.

The Activity pane under Windows works, but it is a an pain activity to have to do that every time I have to check for mail. That old spinner was automatic.

Oddly, the Activity pane below the Mailbox list opens, but it doesn't show anything when I click

"Get Mail". The Help also says to use it. NO JOY.

    Thanks

Don't know what to say. I still have the spinner in SL with Mail 4.2. I don't see any obvious prefs that would change the behavior.

The spinner is there for me for my Gmail and my Hotmail accounts. It's absent from my me.com account because access to that account is instantaneous, so there's no need for a spinner.

I'm using Gmail and Hotmail accounts, too. NO spinner. Is anyone else missing the MacMail Inbox spinner when accessing mail?

I'm tempted to call Apple and ask if there is a toggle or a Terminal fix.

The spinner is next to each of the incoming mail accounts. You do have your left panel open, don't you? If I hide the left panel, you're right, there's no feedback. But even if I collapse the "Inbox" server list, I still see a spinner next to the word "Inbox".

Yep. I can see all the mailboxes including the Inbox. The spinner SHOULD be just to the right of it. Just in case it wasn't open enough, I opened it about two inches. Still no joy.

OK then, are you sure your connection just isn't so fast that you don't get a spinner? When you open the activity window, does it show that you're still checking for a few seconds?

I don't want to have to go through the process of opening the Activity window. That process would take longer than the end signal takes.

That's a possibility; however, the signal that the mail has been checked doesn't sound for a few seconds and I get impatient. I don't know if it's working or not. If I could see the spinner, even for a microsecond, I'd know the system was looking for mail and I wouldn't be concerned.

    Tonton,

Thanks for the feedback. That always helps my mental state even when there is no solution to the problem.

I just have to bitch when things are too slow, AND when they're too fast. Maybe I'm just not used to the iMac yet.

I leave the Activity Window open all the time. I locate it behind the main window so that I can just see the red hexagons while Mail is communicating with the servers. While I don't know what is being communicated I can see that there is a communication going on.
