BT Mouse with iPad

Just got the keyboard dock for my iPad. This would be great for the times when longer documents need to be made ( net book replacement), but using the touch screen is not comfortable or convenient when the ipad is docked. Tried to pair a BT mouse but no luck. Any one have any ideas to make this work?
