External hard drive partition with bootcamp
Hi All,
I have a mac book pro with leopard, split across two partitions:
mac 200 gb
win xp 100 gb
Because of running out of space when editing video files, I bought an external 1tb lacie drive.
ideally i'd like to split it up into 3 partitions like:
1) 120 gb = nfts for windows backup
2) 220 gb = hfs+ for mac time machine
3) 660 gb = hfs+ for extra storage of video files, mainly accessed from mac
when i go to partition in windows, i can do nfts or fat32.
in mac disk utilities i can split it into 3 partitions as above, but no way of formatting a partition as nfts. it only lets you select it as 'free space' which i guess doesn't mount it as a partition.
any ideas how to partition my drive in this way?
also, if i have a drive with different format partitions, will macdrive on windows be able to recognise them?
aside from the 200 gb of space my mac partition takes up (inside laptop) does time machine need additional space on my external drive partition?
Many thanks!

Ok, I should warn you that placing all your partitions in one hardware basket is a recipe for total disaster. It's best to separate things as best as possible to reduce the hardware and malware risk.
Ideally you should clone your OS X and Windows partition to one or two firewire 400/800 drives and keep it separated and updated occasionally as a "hold option" boot-able backup in case your main boot drive has a hardware failure.
Then use the 1TB drive for external storage for video, by the time you partition the Lacie drive with OS X and Windows, you've wasted the best performing sections of the drive with OS copies you only will use in a emergency. The last 50% of the drive seriously starts to reduce performance and with large video files it can be a problem.
Before you do anything with a new drive, you should Disk Utility Erase with Zero option the new drive (just once) as this tries to write 0's to every bit on the drive, finding the poor quality sectors to map off a head of time. Lots of video buffs with large files swear this methods works wonders in insuring file quality as those files tend to cross more sectors than other files.
Here's instructions for cloning your OS X and Windows partition to a external drive.
Do repair permissions on both after cloning and option boot from the clone to completely check out that everything works, you might be depending upon this one day.

You might also consider having the internal drive replaced with something larger, I recommend a Hitachi drive for best quality. If you can take the hit to the battery, get a 7,200 RPM drive for more performance. Also having a extra battery would be a good idea in case your first one goes.
Hope this helps.
