Hard drive failing after trying to upgrade to Leopard?

My teacher tried updating my macbook running Tiger to Leopard today. My macbook wouldn't boot using Leopard. He says it appears that my hard drive is failing? He said that my computer was saying it was having read/write errors. I can still run Tiger fine, computer is running at normal speed. I checked my S.M.A.R.T. status- verified and verified my permission and repaired my disk. I have noticed that my fan has been running hard all day since the attempted upgrade.

I'm not sure what's wrong with my macbook.

Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Your HD is failing! It's just a matter of hours before it gives.

    If it hasn't already...

I've backed up my files. Will replacing my hard drive fix the problem...?
