Reporter who bought the iPhone prototype

What should the penalty be for the reporter who bought the lost or possibly stolen iPhone 4G. Both him and the kid that he got it from knew that they were doing something wrong.



Shouldn't the reporter have called the police or atleast apple and have a sting setup for when he was going to purchase the iPhone 4G?



I know that his superiors approved this and gave him the buy money so aren't they responsible as well?



Any thoughts?
