The iPad, iPod, PS3 and XBox are putting undue pressure on the US and information is bad unless it's used to empower (apparently).

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said at Hampton University in southeastern Virginia.

Obama described the most popular offerings of companies like Apple, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as distractions that are putting unnecessary pressure on the country.

Obama also lamented the spread of social media and blogs, through which "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction."

"All of this is not only putting new pressures on you," Obama said. "It is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."

"We can't stop these changes," he said, "but we can adapt to them. And education is what can allow us to do so. It can fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time."

I merged the two threads together but there's also a thread in PO about this:

You can discuss the iPad/iPod subject here but for political opinions about Obama, use the thread in PO.

If I understand his intended message, I agree. Information is not education any more than vocabulary is language. Knowing all of the words in a foreign language gets you nowhere if you do not know how to put them together to express ideas. Information will not educate you without a solid grounding in the fundamentals of learning. We in the USA have access to more information than any other nation at any other time in history, yet we are not smarter, wiser, or more educated.

Knowing a bunch of facts does us little good if we can't read or apply critical thinking.

It looks like to me, just going by what Obama is saying and not what the article writer is interpreting he said, that Obama was just warning the students away from video games, which the iPod, iPad, X-Box and Playstation are in his eyes. Thus why he never used them being the Blackberry addict he is.

He also seems to be warning them about being more discriminating about the information they hear from various sources that are not mainstream and controlled, casting doubt on these other sources as dubious and untrue.

My experience with newspaper and editors has shown me they indeed restrict, alter and misinterpret information to suit their agenda and protect their interests and political leanings.

It´s vital that people listen to all information from as many sources as possible and make their own judgement as to it´s validity.
