iPod Touch 4th Generation

Hey everyone-

I am a new Mac guy (December 2009) and this is my first post and first day in the forum.

I have had this thing to buy an iPod touch, but all the rumors I have been reading about online say that Apple will be releasing a 4th generation iPod Touch sometime this year.

Is there any truth to this? Should I wait? Should I buy now?

Help!

With Apple it is always hard to know anything for certain; they are very good at keeping things secret.

That said, a good place to check for updates is here:

Though rough, they can give you a good idea whether to hold off a while or plunge in.

We know iPhone OS 4.0 is coming this summer as Apple has announced it. That likely means new iPhones... and we have leaked images of a prototype to add to the probability. As the iPod Touch is very similar to the phone, I think there's a good chance we'll see new one soon after the 4.0 release. If you can wait a bit longer, do. This time there might be a camera in it, but this is Apple so don't expect any particular function; just hope.

Most likely there will be a new ipod Touch late July-August. Expect a camera, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is a Wi-Fi+3G model.

No, Touches are announced with the Fall iPod lineup. Think September or October.

I'm expecting Apple to re target the line up putting out a very low end iPod Touch and then compliment that with a higher end model. That higher end model might actually be larger. I'd just be surprised if anything came before the fall iPod refresh so the original poster has a long wait.

Meanwhile, we current Touch owners will have to shell out $10 for iOS 4 when it arrives. Seems not so bad if you've got a 3rd gen Touch. Adding multi-tasking, bluetooth keyboard entry and all the other 4.0 features looks mighty nice, giving us pretty much an iPod Touch "3.5".

I've been very happy with the Touch updates... really stretches the life of the device.

I think its the iPhone you are referring to that has been leaked two times already!

They say it would be released some time in June. I'm a bit exited because rumor says that it has the same processor

as the iPad which is the A4 chip. Its a really fast one. Hopefully I can get my hands on one of these in the future.

Would really enjoy it since it will be very useful for my job.

While it's the music event, the music event doesn't always occur on September 9. It can, and has occurred in any week in September.

    i would wait

the touch is due for some pad magic or IOS-4 magic to be included in.

Or maybe the touch will leap frog the bunch with a new a5 super chip ..

While wandering around picking up stuff I cruised by the GPS stand. There they had a couple of different manufactures with GPS units in 5 and 7 inch displays. They are fantastic and I could easily see Apple making a Touch in such a format.

Contrary to popular belief they are pocketable and rather thin. These aren't even Apple devices but yet they get a lot of things right. Apple would likely shoot for thinner devices any of course implement more advanced tech but it is pretty clear that the size is right.

I know the odds are against it but I'm really hoping for two Touch devices in the near future. One a direct replacement for the current Touch and something with a screen in the 5 to 7 inch range. I just can't get the idea out of my head that this is the size range for me.

A5 has been targeted by ARM for an improved lower end core. Something to replace ARM 11 in lower end cell phones.

As to waiting I'd have to second that again. I'm pretty sure the upgrade to the Touch will be fairly impressive as more current hardware is adopted. The probability that Apples A4 will be in there is pretty high as is more hardware like the Gyro. Hopefully it is the A4 with the extra RAM too.

    I just found this:

What do you think, is this real or fake??? I hope it´s real. And it looks like the design is the same like the iPhone 4...

I doubt it's real, but it's exactly what I expect to see and it's exactly what I want to see.

I don't see this happening real soon. Most likely 2011 and even then that might be early. Apple likely has some head room in its current A8 implementation to give us one more bump. Combine that with the rather strong engineering team the currently have working on the A9 derived SoC and I see a rather major update for late 2011 or early 2012.

You need to be careful here because the numbers you are likely looking at could be misleading. A9 are often built on newer processes and may not be directly comparable to older A8 generation SoC. Further Apple is using a very unique process from the recently acquired Intrinsity and as such is even further away from direct comparison.

I don't want to dismiss what you are saying though as some labs have taped out A9 SoC running on 22nm processes. The thing here is power demand might drop below what Apple is currently hitting with its SoC just by virtue of the advanced process. This will be extremely impressive chips when they actually get implemented in real hardware. Especially in tablet type devices. Intels only advantage would be the ability to offer up 64 bit systems, they literally do not have a process advantage at all in this realm.

The image is 100% fake. You can easily see where it has been Photoshopped.

The iPod touch 4 is going to look like that, however, as we've seen the front panel and know its design.
