I Got a job in Philly!

Well I've been looking for a few months now and I finally found a job in Philadelphia. I'll be working for a division of the government which shall remain nameless. I'd tell all of you, but thats a lot of people I'd have to exterminate after I revealed that classified information.



Now its time for the arduous task of finding a place to live in PA :eek:



Any of you Philadelphians out there want to recommend some towns and/or apartments/townhomes that are friendly to a commuter traveling to the city everyday? I'll be driving, no trains.



Maybe there's a free frosty beverage in your future if we ever meet up in the city of brotherly love.

    I live just outside of Philly in Drexel Hill. Look me up sometime.

    As for places to live, how about a little more info?

    You looking to buy a house, rent an apartment, rent a house?

    How far is too far of a commute?

    Where in Philly you working, Center City?

    Oh, and don't forget, those taxes you pay, they're just for the privilege of working in the great city of Philadelphia

    I'll be renting an apartment or townhouse. 2 bedrooms, 2 floors would be nice, but not necessary. No more than 25 miles from Northeast Philly.



    I keep hearing about "The Main Line". Whats the deal with that? Is it super expensive and ultra yuppy? hehe



    So far I've been thinking about Yardley, Levittown, Blue Bell and those surround areas.



    As far as that city wage tax goes, I know its a bummer but I hear it pays for the outstanding police and fire departments <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

    They are "outstanding" right? hehe



    What is Drexel Hill like?

    Well, I just mailed in my taxes. So, now that you work for the IRS, hurry up and process that $5,500 tax return check. What are you wasting time for HERE. Hurry up!

    Well, as fun as the Post Office and IRS sound, they're not as interesting as protecting the country.



    Not that I'd be directly protecting the country but working for those people who help those people who work for the people who protect the country. errr something <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />



    Its a programming job.

    Yes, yuppie town. But I've heard that they have a great Mac Users Group up there. Maybe you should look at Manyunk. Little more laid back but has great stores, art galleries, resturants and clubs. And car or no car...taking the train is great. I did it and it is very good.

    Ugh, Yardley, Levittown or Blue Bell? I lived near Blue Bell and it's really not that great. But to each his own. Believe me, the farther you get out of Philly the more likely your commute will be hell.

    Philly cops and fire departments are great. Even living in the city is great. Though since you own a car you'd spend a fortune parking it. Bu you can get some great deals down here now that the exsodus has started again...



    Congrats too on your new job. I'm still searching...lemme know if they need a graphic or web designer...or postal worker for that matter... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    How bad do you think the commute from Yardley (i-95) to Philly would be every morning? I hear 95 south can be pretty bad at times.



    I'll put Manayunk on my list of places to look.

    I'm heading down there sometime this week to go apartment shopping.

I hear 95 south can be pretty bad at times.<hr></blockquote>Remember, any traffic heading TOWARDS Philly during heavy traffic times will be bad. That said, there are other alternatives to I-95. Some better, some worse.

    I grew up in Northeast Philly, right down the street from the airport. There are some nice areas in the NE but overall, I'd say that it's less appealing than it was 10-15 years ago.

    Drexel Hill is a nice suburbia area. Mostly white, middle to upper middle class. My parents still live in NE and it takes me about 40-50 minutes to get there from Drexel Hill though that's on weekends when there isn't as much traffic.

    Unless you're 10 minutes from work, I think the daily commute will suck no matter where you end up living.

    I live in Media, which is probably in distance for you. Media is nice. Yardley....no. Levittown....umm, well it can be OK. Oh and the Airport is south of the city, not in the Northeast.....hello



    Try Media, springfield, etc...maybe a bit far though, Drexel Hill too.

    Thanks for the advice. I posted this a few weeks ago and I found a place now. Its in the Plymouth Meeting area. Work is under 20 miles (15 actually, I think) and the area seems nice.



    PA is so different than NY. I'm paying $300 less a month and I have a townhouse, washer/dryer in my place, dishwasher and microwave. Its also a much larger place. All this and less than I paid in NY. woohoo!!

    Glad you finally found a place! Plymouth Meeting is pretty nice.

    And duh! Of course it's going to be less than NY! Though I guess the realization of that is still kinda overwhelming

    Welcome to the area. You're about 15 minutes from where I live. Maybe we could meet halfway sometime at the Microcenter in St. David's (off the Blue Route).

    Good lord Willoughboy...Plymouth Meeting? I was born and raised there!



    I was up there for my interview yesterday for the IKEA job. It went well. Hope I get a call back this week.



    Now if I get the job and save some money I might move back near there. Only thing is that I would have thought that even an apartment would be expensive (considering that IKEA might be a lower salary from being a "hot shot web designer" salary before).



    Also, and this is just my opinion...it has so changed since my 'ol days. The woods I used to trek in when I was a kid are gone. New offices, hotels and strip malls...kinda sad.



    Also no culture out there to think of. Just megaplexes, malls and TVs. If you don't have a car (which I don't right now) you are totally lost.



    Living in the city has been such an eye opener. So returning to a "culture" like the 'burbs will be a total culture shock to me.



    Did you find any apartments (single/studio) around the area that were reasonable ($450-$500 a month)?

    kaboom, I drove right past that Microcenter in St.Davids. Actually I made a wrong turn and had to go into that shopping center to turn around

    So I found it by accident. Don't they sell macs?

    Yeah I'd meet up there someday. You mean I might actually make a friend in PA? Hey, didn't your license plates say that for a long time, now they just say the state's website. hehehe





    Artman @_@, I went looking for the IKEA today and I found it. I might buy a bookshelf there, or possibly something to put my TV on. Can you get me a discount if you get the job? Just kiddin.



    Actually, I didn't get an apartment, I got a townhouse. Its a rental, I'm not buying it. Its 2 bedrooms, 2 floors, 1.5 baths, around $1200 a month. Its really nice and like I said, anything is better than the dinky little place I paid $1500 for in NY
