Traveling to Italy - Unlock or just go wi-fi?

I have recently bought a 3Gs. I will be spending a month in Italy this summer. I am considering unlocking my phone, and picking up a temp sim for while I am in Italy. The alternative I am considering is buying some offline maps for the areas I will be in, and then setting to airplane mode. I can then use wi-fi where I can find it.



Has anyone tried either of these methods?



I am not sure how available *free* wi-fi will be. Also, I am not sure if unlocking my phone will cause any problems with my existing apps.
