Speculation: G4 AND G5 rumors true?

There appear two sets of rumors flying right now. The first is that the next speed bump for PowerMacs will be fairly small with speeds topping out at just over 1GHz, ie 866, 933, 1.13GHz. The actual speeds vary, but the spirit of the rumor is there.

The second is the G5 rumor. Speeds ranging from 1.2GHz all the way up to something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon, a la "Ridiculous, ain't it?".

Now, some folks have mentioned that it would be "really neat" for Apple to introduce a ProSumer box that could sit between the iMac and the PowerMac.

So, here's my speculation part:

Apple will be introducing a new ProSumer line using updated G4 processors AND a new PM line using G5's.

Rather than take the rumors one at a time, but as a whole, there seems to be a pattern emerging. Granted, it's incredibly weak, but it seems to be there. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Anyway, that's my impression. Could be I'm completely off base. It's happened before.

What "pattern"? That isn't what you mean. I don't think this will happen. I would like it if it did though. The only problem is pricing. Since we have $1799 800MHZ G4 iMac with a SuperDrive, display and 256MB of RAM, we would need something like:

    G4 Tower

    933MHZ G4

    266MHZ Bus

    60GB

    AirPort Card Included

    Geforce 3

    SuperDrive

    256MB

    $1799

    $2099 with 15" flat panel

    $2299 with 17" Flat panel

    G4 Tower

    1GHZ+

    80GB

    Geforce 3

    512MB

    80GB

    SuperDrive

    $2299

    $2599 with 15" flat panel

    $2799 with 17" flat panel

    G5 Pro Tower

    1.2GHZ

    266MHZ bus

    Geforce 4

    SuperDrive II (DVD-RW)

    512MB DDR

    60GB

    AirPort Included

    $2499

    G5 Tower 1.4 GHZ

    512MB/Super II/Geforce 4/80GB

    $2999

    G5 1.6 GHZ

    768MB/Super II/Geforce 4/100GB

    $3499

    G5 Dual 1.4GHZ

    1GB/Super II/Geforce 4/100GB

    $3999

This would be a solution. Though, it makes things tight. It won't happen, though I would think about that top end G4.

What happens with these rumors is that some of the specs are correct, some are not. Throw out enough numbers and you're bound to get some of the info right. Coming on Tuesday, the 29th will probably be upgraded G4's along with the new iMac finally shipping/available. I would guess that G5's with completely new enclosurers (and much smaller in footprint) will arrive at MWNY this coming summer. Also at that time we'll see a new digital hub product, either iCamera or iCamCorder or perhaps both. Also upgraded iMacs with slightly faster processors and larger hard discs across the boardl. Prices will remain the same. Well, my contact with the future has faded away......
