Philadelphia World Cinema '02

It's been too hot to stay in the apartment and waiting around for call backs job wise is driving me nutty so... I went to a few of the hundreds of films showing around Philly the past 2 weeks. Missed the first week but got to see three:

Horror Hotline - Big Head Baby: A Hong Kong horror flick. Was expecting the usual blood and gore but was really diappointed with this one. You wait until the end to see the Big Head Baby and it's just a badly rendered CG animation. The ending was a total "Blair Witch Project" rip-off. NO STARS.

CQ: Roman Cappola's debut film. Very cool, hip film about an American film editor working in Italy in the 60's on a "Barberella" style flick called "Dragonfly". Jeremy Davies, Elodie Bouchez, Gerard Depardieu, Jason Swartzman, Billy Zane, Dean Stockwell, John Phillip Law and (gulp) Angela Lindvall star. I hope this is released nation wide. It deserves it. Part camp, part homage to cinema and the score (by Mellow) is awesome. 5 STARS

Versus: Japanese Samurai, Supernatural, Martial Arts Gore Fest. Wow. This was a hilarious film. Full of great action, bad acting, fake blood and body parts. Think a cross between the Evil Dead, Night of the Living Dead, The Matrix and 7 Samurai wrapped into a comical wrapper of overacting. I highly recommend this one...if you're into that stuff. The packed audience was rolling in the aisles. 5 STARS

Bikini Bandits was the one local film that was impossible to get into. Sold out at every screening...

I wish I could have seen some others but there were so many all at once. It always is a great annual film fest. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
